Cylink Licenses Common Data Security Architecture Software From Intel; Intel Distributes Cylink Technology for Enabling Cylink Smart Cards and Readers

Business Wire, Sept 15, 1998

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 15, 1998--Cylink Corporation (Nasdaq:CYLK), a leading provider of network security and VPN solutions since 1984, announces that it has licensed CDSA software from Intel.

Using Intel's CDSA reference implementation, Cylink will deliver a version of its CryptoKit(tm) toolkit which will support CDSA and provide software developers the ability to build distributed and standalone applications with full-strength, public and symmetric key cryptography, including smart card support with the added security confidence and strategic assurances the CDSA framework brings to the marketplace.

Developed by Intel Corporation, adopted by The Open Group, and supported by leading companies such as Apple, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, JP Morgan, Motorola, Shell Companies, and Sun Microsystems, CDSA is an industry-accepted specification for the development of secure applications that are interoperable, extensible, and offer cross-platform support. CDSA offers flexible and configurable use of cryptography, certificate management, trust policy management, key and certificate lookup, storage and retrieval, and optional key recovery.

"The merging of the CDSA standard with Cylink's CryptoKit technology gives developers the dual benefits of a standard API on top of a robust, field-proven, cryptography engine," said William Crowell, Vice President of Business Strategy at Cylink.

"Cylink's choice of CDSA as the security infrastructure for their CryptoKit product demonstrates the industry's expanded investment in CDSA," said Michael Glancy, General Manager of the Platform Security Division at Intel Corporation. "CDSA adds a standard framework and a broad range of security services to Cylink's product line, to meet the needs of e-commerce and other business application developers."

As part of this agreement, Intel will distribute Cylink's PrivateSafe(tm) and PrivateCard(tm) smart card driver to its licensees of the CDSA 2.0 reference implementation. CDSA licensees will be able to incorporate the Cylink smart card driver software free of charge in order to enable their products for Cylink's PrivateSafe and PrivateCard readers and cards.

The Cylink CryptoKit offers a comprehensive set of functions that allow application developers and system integrators to build from simple privacy to fully distributed, PKI-based security into their existing applications. The new CryptoKit toolkit version will be previewed at the Intel Developer Forum, Sept. 15-17 in Palm Springs, Calif.; for more information visit the Intel Developer Forum website at http://developer.intel.com/design/idf/.>Cylink's CryptoKit

CryptoKit is designed to enhance security on virtually any desktop or distributed application with features that include encryption, authentication, access control, data integrity verification, and non-repudiation. The security services provided are all based on industry standards such as Diffie-Hellman for public key generation; DES and Triple-DES for bulk encryption; DSS for digital signature; SHA-1 and MD5 for hashing, and X.509v3 for certificates. The PrivateCard(tm) smart cards add RSA support. Use of CryptoKit(tm) lowers the cost for ISVs to make their applications "public key aware" and also lets them support a wide variety of security policies.
