QuickCam VC Now Available for Macintosh; Top-Selling PC Video Camera Is Ready for iMac
Business Wire, Sept 2, 1998
FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 2, 1998--Logitech (NASDAQ:LOGIY; Switzerland:LOGZ), international market leader in human interface devices designed to provide a natural, intuitive link between people and computers, today announced QuickCam(R) VC for iMac(TM) and Universal Serial Bus (USB)-enabled Mac(R) OS computers.
The new QuickCam for iMac product, which takes advantage of Apple's USB support, joins the growing Logitech family of QuickCam PC video cameras that the company acquired today from Connectix Corporation.
QuickCam VC is available through major computer resellers at an estimated retail price of $99 USD (after $30 rebate). Earlier packages of QuickCam VC will require a free driver download from the Internet before running on USB-enabled Mac OS computers.
"The QuickCam line has a long-standing reputation for excellence among Macintosh users, providing them with easy-to-use, cutting-edge digital video products," stated Junien Labrousse, vice president of Logitech'sVideo Business Division. "As the first digital video camera developed specifically for the iMac, QuickCam VC strengthens this relationship even more."
"iMac is designed to cost-effectively bring the power of the Internet into everyone's homes," said David Moody, director of desktop product marketing at Apple Computer, Inc. "Pairing it with QuickCam VC adds an exciting dimension to the Mac and Internet experience -- fast and simple visual communication."
QuickCam VC is the first tethered color digital camera to be offered to Mac users for under $100 USD (after mail-in rebate). Despite this low price, however, the product is optimized for faster frame rates to yield a more enjoyable video-conferencing experience. Whether video-conferencing over the Internet, doing a webpage broadcast, or attaching a still image or video clip to email, QuickCam VC is ideal for communicating visually over the Internet.
Upgrading from the serial port QuickCam to the USB port QuickCam VC provides a major boost in performance. The new QuickCam VC can be installed on Apple's iMac simply by plugging it into the USB port and loading the software. Power Mac users without USB support will require the addition of a USB PCI card.
QuickCam(R) VC supports industry protocols such as the QuickTime standard for compatibility with popular software packages. This commitment to standards-based design means that QuickCam VC functions with virtually any Macintosh(R) video-conferencing package, as well as popular video and still image-enabled applications.
QuickCam VC for Macintosh requires an iMac(TM) or a Mac(R) OS computer with a USB PCI card. QuickCam software runs on Mac OS 8.0 or higher.
