Data General Now Delivering Full End-to-End Fibre Channel Storage With NT Servers

Business Wire, Sept 23, 1998

WESTBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 1998--Data General Corporation, the worldwide leader in the NT midrange server market, announced today that it is now shipping full end-to-end Fibre Channel storage to its NT customers.

The company said that its CLARiiON FC5000 Series of Fibre Channel storage systems is available with its departmental and enterprise AViiON NT servers, including the AV 3650, the AV 3700 and the high-end, eight-processor AV 8600. The FC5000 systems are also available with Data General's powerful NUMA technology based servers running DG/UX.

Full Fibre-Channel storage includes Fibre disks as well as front-end server-attach Fibre technology. As opposed to traditional storage technology, Fibre Channel provides greater performance and scalability and allows much greater flexibility in terms of cabling distances and connectivity devices.

The FC5000 is a key component in the CLARiiON Multidimensional Storage Architecture, a flexible framework for deploying open systems storage throughout the enterprise. At the high-end, FC5000 Series arrays are capable of handling more than 10,000 I/Os per second for business-critical database applications.

"Data General is committed to providing the industry's most advanced and most comprehensive enterprise NT solutions," said Linda Mentzer, vice president of AViiON Marketing for Data General. "In combination, our AViiON servers and CLARiiON end-to-end Fibre Channel storage arrays will provide the robust performance, scalability and high availability our NT customers need to handle the most demanding of online transaction processing, enterprise resource planning and decision support applications."

Data General is the worldwide leader in mid-range NT systems, according to International Data Corporation. In 1997, Data General's AViiON server line rated number one with 28 percent marketshare in the midrange segment, which includes systems priced between $100,000 and one million dollars.

CLARiiON Fibre Channel storage systems also will be available with Data General's unique pre-configured, pre-tested rackmounted AViiON "in-a-Box" packages, including NT Cluster-in-a-Box running Microsoft Cluster Server and TermServer-in-a-Box running Microsoft Windows Terminal Server.

"In-a-Box" configurations include two AViiON servers, a fault-tolerant CLARiiON RAID technology storage system, and the company's NTerprise Manager server management software in a single rackmounted system.
