AlliedSignal Selected To Supply APUs and Environmental Controls for Fairchild Aerospace's New Aircraft Family

Business Wire, Sept 8, 1998

FARNBOROUGH, England--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 8, 1998-- AlliedSignal Inc. (NYSE:ALD) Tuesday announced that it will supply integrated environmental control systems (ECS) and auxiliary power units (APU) for Fairchild Aerospace's new family of jet aircraft.

The first member of the new family to enter service will be the 728JET, with certification and initial deliveries expected in mid-2001.

Under the terms of the agreement, AlliedSignal will provide its RE220FD APU. The APU will provide compressed air for main engine starting as well as electrical power for the aircraft. The unit will start and operate throughout the aircraft's flight envelope.

AlliedSignal's ECS consists of the bleed air system, air conditioning system, cabin pressure control system, and associated high-pressure ducting design with a bleed air leak detection. AlliedSignal is also responsible for the low-pressure cabin ducting and air distribution system and avionics cooling.

Acting as the ECS lead will be Normalair-Garrett Limited (NGL), the UK-based joint venture between AlliedSignal and GKN Westland, in which AlliedSignal acquired a majority interest earlier this year. NGL has a long-standing relationship with Fairchild Aerospace, providing the ECS for the 228, 328, 328JET.

"The AlliedSignal package provides Fairchild Aerospace operators a worldwide product support network and a service-proven system to maximize performance, while minimizing operating cost," said Al Hendershot, vice president, Environmental Control Systems, AlliedSignal Aerospace Equipment Systems.

"Fairchild Aerospace selected the RE220 APU because of its high reliability, broad performance range for 50 - 110 seat applications, low noise signature, and easy maintenance," said Tom Johnson, vice president, Commercial Auxiliary Power, AlliedSignal Engines. "We have accumulated more than 12,000 hours of testing on the RE220, with planned service on four new commercial aircraft."

The RE220 APU has also been selected for the Bombardier Global Express, the Gulfstream GV and the Canadair Regional Jet.

In addition to the ECS and APUs, NGL is partnerning with Parker-Abex on the hydraulic systems for the 728 family of regional jets. NGL will supply the reservoirs, filter manifolds and oil coolers, and will support Parker Abex in the system definition and integration tasks.
