United Airlines Nearly Doubles Service for Silicon Valley Business Travelers; Carrier Brings Shuttle by United Service to San Jose; Adds Washington D.C. Flight

Business Wire, Sept 9, 1998

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 9, 1998--San Jose business travelers en route to Los Angeles or Washington, D.C., have more options starting today as United Airlines expands service from San Jose International Airport.

The expansion includes one daily non-stop flight to Dulles International Airport, and the introduction of eight daily round-trip flights to Los Angeles on Shuttle by United, the airline's low-cost, all-jet business service. United anticipates adding jobs at San Jose International Airport to accommodate the new service.

San Jose marks the 21st city to receive Shuttle by United service, which offers low fares and a more professional short-haul travel experience. One-way fares to Los Angeles International Airport start at $61, based on a 14-day advance purchase; walk-up fares are $86 each way.

"Shuttle by United offers more than affordable access to LA and other destinations throughout the West and also provides San Jose travelers with convenient connections to the South Pacific, Asia, Hawaii, and Mexico," said Shuttle by United President Amos Kazzaz. "And with the addition of San Jose, Shuttle by United is the only carrier flying from all three Bay Area airports to LA."

Dulles Flight Provides Access to East Coast and Abroad

With the addition of daily transcontinental service to Washington, D.C., Silicon Valley and other South Bay travelers can fly non-stop to the growing East Coast technology center and surrounding markets. They can also conveniently connect to Europe and Latin America via Dulles International Airport. As the home to nearly 50 percent of Silicon Valley's top networking, telecommunications, semiconductor and equipment firms, San Jose generates a larger proportion of business travel than most other U.S. cities.

"It is San Jose's phenomenal growth that makes it possible for United to add service, giving travelers here more access and more options for their business travel needs," said Frank Kent, United's managing director for the Bay Area. "The transcontinental flight to Dulles, and the addition of Shuttle by United, demonstrates the depth of United's commitment to San Jose, which we've served proudly for 30 years."

United Airlines is the largest airline serving the greater Bay Area. In addition to the new flights, United operates five daily non-stop flights to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, five daily non-stop flights to Denver International Airport and one daily non-stop flight to Boston's Logan International Airport. The Bay Area is home to nearly 20,000 United employees and houses two of United's three maintenance hubs -- at Oakland and San Francisco -- and the largest flight attendant domicile on United's system.
