Attachmate Hosts High-Tech Take Our Daughters To Work Day Event; Company Shows Girls How to Design, Build, and Market an E-business Web Site

Business Wire, April 19, 1999

BELLEVUE, Wash.-(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 19, 1999--Attachmate Corporation, one of Washington's best companies to work for and a leading employer on the eastside, today announced it will host 70 girls between the ages of 9-15 during its second annual high-tech Take Our Daughters To Work Day Thursday, April 22, 1999.

Research indicates adult encouragement can change the course of a girl's life. Attachmate's participation in this day empowers girls to envision the possibilities for their future in the high-tech world.

e-Business 101. The day's events will focus on e-business. The girls were first introduced to e-business by registering for the day by participating in the online registration process. On Thursday, the girls will work in teams to plan, design, and develop an e-business Web site as well as how to market the site. Additionally, the girls will have the opportunity to interview 12 female Attachmate(R) employees about their careers. All aspects of the day will expose them to product management, development, and marketing. Phyllis Campbell, US Bank president, is the day's keynote speaker.

"Girls at this stage in their lives often give up on anything that sounds like `science.' As a high-tech company, we're interested in capturing these girls' minds and imaginations," said Mary Harwood, Attachmate vice president of corporate marketing and relations. "Attachmate believes that in their personal and professional lives the girls will rely on the Internet as a tool and resource. Attachmate is striving to help them understand how this resource can be harnessed for business purposes."

How it all got started. Take Our Daughters To Work started in 1993 as a citywide program in New York by the Ms. Foundation to help girls remain strong and confident. The program went national with an outpouring of enthusiasm from adults. Millions of girls have gone to work with an adult in the last five years. Attachmate is committed to supporting a wide and diverse array of recognized non-profit organizations. Its employees support organizations such as the United Way, American Cancer Society, Leukemia Society of America, the National MS Society, and the Puget Sound Blood Bank -- hosting six drives annually. Its employees volunteer their time for reading programs, neighborhood improvement, and environmental support. Company sponsorship and employee participation in these programs contributed to making Attachmate one of the five best large companies to work for in Washington in 1997 and 1998, as reported by Washington CEO magazine.

For more than 16 years in Bellevue, Attachmate has established itself in the high tech industry and the local community. As the second largest software company in the state of Washington, Attachmate employs over 1700 people -- with approximately half of the employee population at its Bellevue headquarters.
