Gensym Corporation Announces Major Deal With ASC; Saudi Aramco Selects Gensym's Neural Network Software

Business Wire, April 30, 1999

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 30, 1999--

Gensym Corp. (Nasdaq:GNSM), a leading provider of software and services for intelligent operations management, today announced a multi-site licensing deal with Aramco Services Company that provides for the use of Gensym's neural network software, NeurOn-Line Studio(tm) (NOL Studio), in a number of Saudi Aramco's refineries and several gas plants in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Aramco will use Gensym's NOL Studio for process modeling and on-line applications. By estimating and analyzing stream quality parameters in real time, the software will be an important component of the company's total plant solutions.

"With this technology, Saudi Aramco process engineers will be able to rapidly produce high-fidelity models of their processes, analyze the process dynamics and estimate process quality parameters," said Samy Achour, Gensym's director of sales, chemical, oil & gas, EMA. "Up until now, they had to rely on expensive and hard-to-maintain analyzers and infrequent lab results. By having better process quality information reliably and immediately available, Saudi Aramco will be able to avoid product giveaways and ensure on-spec product quality."

"We are very pleased that Saudi Aramco selected Gensym software for process modeling and on-line applications," said Bob Moore, Gensym's president. "We believe that Saudi Aramco's deployment plan of NOL Studio is a great example of the acceptance of Gensym software for achieving economic benefits in refining and gas operations. In today's highly competitive environment, it is vital to gain every advantage for better operations management."

About NeurOn-Line Studio

NOL Studio reduces the effort required to build neural network models using real-time process data. As the latest addition to Gensym's NeurOn-Line product family, the new NOL Studio version automates and optimizes many aspects of building neural network models. Running as a native application in Microsoft Windows NT , NOL Studio presents an industry-standard look and feel and does not require expert knowledge of neural networks or statistics. Once models are built in NOL Studio, they can be deployed in plant operations using G2's powerful runtime environment, or they can be embedded in applications as objects based on Microsoft's COM technology.
