Orang-Otang Brings Wearable Computing to eBay and Amazon

Business Wire, August 11, 1999

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 11, 1999--

The pioneer of consumer-priced wearable computing products, Orang-Otang(R) Computers, Inc., has begun selling directly to users via the leading on-line auction sites, eBay.com and Amazon.com. Setting opening bids at a fraction of retail, Orang-Otang views these personal trading forums as excellent venues to introduce the benefits of wearable computing to the consumer market. Orang-Otang's seller ID is "wearable" on both eBay and Amazon.

"Before Orang-Otang, wearable computers cost over $5000 per unit, well beyond the price range of most individuals or small businesses," says Orang-Otang CEO & President, Scott C. Hollifield. "Now, anyone who has a Palm V or similar PDA can enjoy genuine wearable computing for less than $50."

Orang-Otang's best-selling product, the Peel-It(TM), serves as a case for the 3Com Palm Pilot, Philips Nino, Casio E-11, and IBM WorkPad, among other PDA's. Unlike other cases, however, the Peel-It can be worn on the user's wrist for complete mobility and hands-free convenience. Users of bar-code scanners that are incorporated into PDA's such as the Symbol SPT-1500, benefit greatly from this hands-free use, and the company is marketing its products to become standard equipment for automatic ID/data capture operations. The Peel-It comes in a variety of colors and fabrics including the most popular selection, blue denim.

The Peel-It gained immediate popularity when launched in late 1998, being featured in Computer World, Home Office Computing, Wearable Computing and PalmPower Magazine, which awarded it the Editor's Choice Product of the Year award. As handheld information technology grows more ubiquitous, the Peel-It continues to be deployed in even more varied settings ranging from warehouses to oil tankers and wrecking and recycling yards.

Orang-Otang Computers, Inc., based in Northern California, was founded in 1995 to make the benefits of hands-free computing affordable to individual consumers. Orang-Otang's wrist-wearable computers, monitors, pagers, wireless phones and PDA accessories represent the cutting edge of 21st century mobile technology. Orang-Otang also publishes Wearable Computing(TM), the industry's leading magazine, available at www.wearablecomputing.com.
