SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 11, 1999--

First-Place Tools, Companies, and Industry Leaders Named at

LinuxWorld Magazine's Awards Ceremony During LinuxWorld Expo

in San Jose

At a special awards ceremony held here today, LinuxWorld magazine announced the winners in the first-ever LinuxWorld Editors' Choice Awards. The event, held in conjunction with the LinuxWorld Conference & Expo, took place on the show floor at the San Jose Convention Center.

Products from both commercial vendors and from the open source and free software communities were considered for awards. Winners and finalists in 17 awards categories were honored with trophies.

"Selecting products for Editors' Choice this year was an overwhelming experience. There's just so much terrific software available for Linux. It looks like we're going to have our hands full continuing to sort out the best of the best over the years.

"I was thrilled to see a few surprises in our list this year. Mandrake is a relative newcomer, and it snatched up 'Product of the Year.' Caldera 2.2 also swept us off our feet. You don't expect to see products of this caliber while Linux popularity is still in its infancy," Nick Petreley, editorial director of LinuxWorld magazine, said of the awards program.
