``Runaway Bride'' Tops $100 Million Domestic Box Office; The Fastest Grossing Romantic Comedy to Hit $100 Million

HOLLYWOOD, Calif.--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Aug. 18, 1999--

"Runaway Bride," which brings Julia Roberts, Richard Gere and director Garry Marshall together for the first time since they teamed up for the blockbuster hit "Pretty Woman," crossed the $100 million mark in the United States and Canada on Tuesday, Aug. 17, it was announced today by Wayne Lewellen, president of distribution for Paramount Pictures' Motion Picture Group.

The film opened in the United States and Canada on Friday, July 30 with an opening weekend (July 30-Aug. 1) box office gross of $35,055,556. The domestic box office total through Aug. 17 is $101,141,221.

The domestic box office for "Runaway Bride" surpassed $100 million in 19 days of theatrical release and is now the fastest grossing romantic comedy ever to reach that milestone. "My Best Friend's Wedding" which reached $100 million in 37 days previously held the record.

A romantic comedy, "Runaway Bride" stars Julia Roberts as a woman who has left three grooms at the altar and Richard Gere as the cynical reporter who decides to write an article about her marital near-misses, predicting that she will do it again.

"Runaway Bride," starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, is directed by Garry Marshall, produced by Ted Field and Tom Rosenberg, Scott Kroopf and Robert Cort, and written by Josann McGibbon & Sara Parriott. The executive producers are Ted Tannebaum, David Madden and Gary Lucchesi. Karen Stirgwolt, Richard Wright, Ellen H. Schwartz and Mario Iscovich serve as co-producers. Also appearing in "Runaway Bride" are Joan Cusak, Hector Elizondo, Rita Wilson and Paul Dooley. "Runaway Bride" is a Paramount Pictures and Touchstone Pictures presentation, an Interscope Communications production in association with Lakeshore Entertainment. Paramount Pictures is part of the entertainment operations of Viacom Inc. MPAA Rating PG.
