New Services from Sun Provide Jini(TM) Technology Capabilities
to Tactical Operation Centers Worldwide
Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW) today announced that it has been working with the US Army to outline their implementation of Jini(TM) connection technology to support battlefield applications executed in the Army's Battlefield Command Systems (ABCS) Tactical Operation Centers (TOCs) worldwide.
This Sun Professional Services Java Center(SM) engagement provided the US Army with the following benefits: -0-
- An infrastructure easily adaptable to battlefield scenarios
and can also withstand partial failure or destruction of
critical battlefield applications.
- An adaptable infrastructure used with the services available
in a Tactical Operation Center (TOC) capable of dynamically
discovering and registering availability within a subnet and
facilitating the discovery of inter-subnet and inter-TOC
communications.
- System interoperability and just-in-time capabilities
- Faster implementation and documentation of network
configuration The Jini technology provided by Sun was chosen
by the US Army to help further the goal of increased
interoperability and free flow of information within the
military's internal Information Systems.

"Prior to the Jini implementation it was time consuming and difficult to add computing resources to the fast changing battlefield environment. Jini technology's ability to communicate with our existing system has accelerated our implementation time and increased our functionality," said Dr. David Usechak, Director of Common Software, US Army.
