ObjectSpace Releases Voyager Application Server 3.1; New Features Include Load Balancing, Fault Tolerance, DCOM Support and Dynamic XML
Business Wire, August 3, 1999
DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 3, 1999--
ObjectSpace Inc., a leading supplier of distributed computing solutions for the enterprise, announced the release of its Voyager Application Server(TM) 3.1.
Leveraging the strength of Voyager ORB Professional, Voyager Application Server enables the construction of industrial-strength, scalable distributed applications through its advanced directory service replication, load balancing capabilities and connection management.
This product offers a true EJB development environment for business-application programmers and EJB-component builders and, through its "universal container," simultaneously supports RMI, CORBA and COM clients. Written in 100% Pure Java(TM), Voyager Application Server supports the EJB, JDBC, JNDI, RMI and JTA Enterprise Java APIs, as well as the industry-standard CORBA 2 ORB, Naming, and Object Transaction Services.
"As a unique universal container, Voyager Application Server opens the door to integrating emerging technologies," said Steve Garone, IDC industry analyst. "With the release of Voyager Application Server, ObjectSpace has once again secured their position as the leading provider of superior enterprisewide, cross-platform solutions."
Voyager Application Server addresses the enterprise-level needs for reliability and scalability through new load balancing and fault tolerance capabilities.
While some servers store custom configuration files with each server, Voyager Application Server uses a secure, persistent implementation of JNDI (the Java Naming and Directory Interface) to store configuration information in a centralized directory.
Multiple servers can store their configuration information in this directory, and each server can be administered remotely from within the Voyager graphical environment, the Voyager Management Console.
"Built on the strength and universality of Voyager ORB, the Voyager Application Server from ObjectSpace delivers the industry's most flexible application server," said David Norris, ObjectSpace president and CEO.
"Voyager enables organizations to leverage their investments in technology by serving as a bridge between legacy APIs and the new Java Enterprise APIs. Voyager Application Server embraces the new Java Enterprise, allowing organizations to evolve with the industry."
To streamline deployment efforts, Voyager Application Server includes EJB Studio, a powerful, GUI-driven management tool providing the fastest, most flexible way to package EJB components. The use of intuitive graphical interfaces means developers do not need to master arcane command-line tools and low-level EJB configuration formats.
Developers merely specify the design-level properties of their components and the EJB Studio handles the rest. The result is that tasks that can require several steps in other products are accomplished with the click of a single button.
The Voyager Application Server is part of the Voyager product family for state-of-the-art, distributed computing that simplifies and unifies the most common industry standards. This family includes Voyager ORB, a high-performance, full-featured object request broker that simultaneously supports CORBA and RMI.
Its innovative dynamic proxy generation takes ease of use to the next level by removing the need for stub generators. Voyager ORB includes a universal naming service, activation framework, publish/subscribe, and mobile agent technology.
Voyager ORB Professional builds on the strength of Voyager ORB and adds a powerful GUI-driven management console, a light client for remote-enabling applets within a 15K footprint, a DCOM bridge, Dynamic XML and much more.
Voyager Security includes a flexible security framework, lightweight security implementation, support for secure network communications via SSL adapters, and firewall tunneling using the industry standard HTTP and SOCKS protocols. Voyager Transactions delivers full OTS-compliant distributed transaction support, including two-phase commit and a one-phase commit JDBC adapter.
Voyager Application Server 3.1 is available and can be purchased directly from ObjectSpace. A 30-day evaluation copy of Voyager Application Server 3.1 can be downloaded from the ObjectSpace Web site at www.objectspace.com.
