Clarent Enters IP Telephony Market in Greece; Two Telcos Adopt Clarent IP Telephony Technology for Their Networks
Business Wire, August 31, 1999
ST. ALBANS, England--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 31, 1999--
Clarent(R) Corporation (Nasdaq:CLRN), a worldwide leader in carrier-grade, phone-to-phone IP telephony solutions, today announced the deployment of Clarent technology in the networks of two carriers in Greece: TelePassport Hellas S.A. and Cosmoline S.A.
This announcement follows the establishment of a Clarent office in Greece in March 1999 and positions Clarent as a leading provider of IP telephony services in the Greek market.
TelePassport AG , a pan-European telecommunications provider based in Germany, was established in 1993 to service business customers in every major German city, as well as in neighbouring European countries. The company's extensive experience in offering low cost, high quality telecoms services dates back to long before the telecommunications market first began to open up, when it was already offering low cost call routing via overseas and other European nodes. TelePassport Hellas S..A. is the Greek member of the TelePassport AG Group and was recently established to provide a range of voice and fax over IP services to Closed User Groups and Corporate Networks throughout the Greek region and the Wider Balkan and Middle East Area.
As a newcomer to the Greek marketplace, TelePassport Hellas S.A's strategy is to implement the most modern and technologically advanced equipment available in order to exploit the latest advances in telecommunications and pass the benefits onto its customer base. This includes the implementation of Clarent's IP telephony call routing, management and billing technology. TelePassport Hellas S.A.'s stated intention is to greatly expand its IP services in preparation for the deregulation of the Greek telecom market after December 31st 2000, at which time it plans to focus on providing telecommunications services at far more competitive prices than those currently offered by incumbent carriers.
Cosmoline operates a fully managed, backbone network in Greece, consisting of 37 nodes, in 22 cities within the country. Cosmoline is in the process of enhancing its network by offering value-added services to its customers, one of which is Voice over IP. Cosmoline is currently offering Clarent-based VoIP services to over 90 closed user groups. During the next year it intends to grow its IP telephony services customer base in the Greek marketplace, and in the greater Balkan and Black Sea regions.
Lorenzo Stella, area vice president of Clarent for the Southern Mediterranean Region, expressed; "We are extremely excited about the development of IP telephony services within the Greek marketplace. These latest partnerships with two of the most respected emerging telecommunications companies in the country, along with our recent alliance with Greek distributor Pouliadis Associates Corp., really puts Clarent in a strong position here." -0-
