Called "completely paradigm-shifting," @pos.com's innovative business-to-business and consumer Internet-based offerings feature Java technology in every part of its services for receipt generation, storage, retrieval, and management. Utilizing the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) in its iPOS TC(TM) point-of-sale device enables innovative advertising, customer surveys and marketing opportunities for retailers and brand managers. The @pos.com data center uses the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition to manage receipt data for one-to-one marketing on the web-enabled, Java platform-based transaction device to in-store customers.
"@pos.com's product is a great example of a dot.com company leveraging the end-to-end power of the Java 2 platform to create a unique retail service that is real and available today," said George Paolini, vice president, Java Community Development, Sun Microsystems.
"Java technology is vital in the development of our services because it provides the open architecture essential for accepting applications from our various strategic alliance partners. Java technology also allows for rapid deployment and easy integration into the existing POS systems of our retail customers," said Aziz Valliani, president and CEO, @pos.com, Inc.
The @pos.com offerings demonstrated include: -0-
-- A "web-enabled" POS device, the iPOS TC (interactive
Point-of-Sale Transaction Computer), enabling personalized ads,
promotions and surveys at the POS.

Middleware/Backend
@pos.com's In-Store Solutions Group is dedicated to the incorporation of Jini(TM) connection technology, the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition, and Oracle 8i into a distributed services architecture. "We are in the process of enabling point-of-sale devices with Jini connection technology," says Apurva Desai, manager of the In-Store Solutions Group. "Soon we will be able to demonstrate an event-driven retail environment that is fully connected to the Internet."
In addition to the Java 2 platform, the @pos.com POS terminal also employs technologies from Microware, Espial and Intel Corp.
"Microware's OS-9 provided us with the complete solution we needed to deliver an innovative, Internet-enabled device that will dramatically enhance the retail consumer experience," said Lavan Fernando, chief technology officer, @pos.com. "Microware's OS-9, based on Sun's PersonalJava(TM) technology and Microware's development environment, not only saved us development time but utilized the advanced operating system functionality such as security, stability and reliability that are required in a high availability retail device."
According to Alan Anderson, director of Java Technology for Microware, "Our proven OS-9 solution and our track record of deployments made Microware the obvious choice for the device side of @pos.com's system."
@pos.com is using Espial's development tools, based on Sun's PersonalJava technology, and Internet application solutions to power its interactive POS transaction device (iPOS TC). Integrated into the device is Espial's Kalos Espresso, the industry's only PersonalJava GUI toolkit, and Espial Escape, a full-featured Java technology web-browser including JavaScript support into the iPOS TC.
"Espial's Kalos Espresso and Escape browser enable @pos.com to offer their customers new and innovative ways to customize the iPOS TC and enhance merchant brand loyalty," said Espial's James Chow. "This allows customers to differentiate themselves and stay competitive in today's retail industry. "
