Public Analysis & Review Announces Investment Opinion on PacketPort.com, Inc
Business Wire, Dec 16, 1999
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 16, 1999--
Analyst coverage for PacketPort.com, Inc. (OTC BB: PKPT) will be initiated immediately by Sherry Grisewood, CFA, for Public Analysis & Review (PAR), the unique professional independent analyst program administered by the non-profit Investors Research Institute, Inc., and distributed by Investrend Research, according to John M. Dutton, Investrend Research president.
PacketPort.com develops and markets Internet Protocol Telephony products and services for the Internet, telecom and other data networking industries. The Company emerged debt-free from the November 1999 reorganization of its predecessor, Linkon (BB: LKON), and is advantaging itself of Linkon's strong technical position. The magazine, Internet Telephony, named the Corporation's LinkNet IP Telephony Switch as a "Product of the Year" for 1998. PacketPort.com's products are sold to end-users and through system integrators, application developers, value-added resellers and original equipment manufacturers.
PacketPort.com's future is tied to its position in providing equipment for Internet Telephony, which Frost & Sullivan projects to grow at a rate of 57%, exceeding $10 billion by 2005. Today, the Public Switched Telephone (PSTN) network, using Signaling System 7 (SS7), establishes a circuit for each phone call and maintains it exclusively for those users for the duration of the call. This voice method is inefficient.
Alternatively, Internet Protocol (IP) divides data into small packets. It is more efficient, as it allows many messages to be sent nearly simultaneously. Voice over IP (VOIP) has the potential to substantially lower the cost of voice [telephone] calls tremendously due to the increased efficiency. Although VOIP has been successfully demonstrated (and is being widely used) from PC to PC or within a corporate LAN, it is extremely difficult to originate calls from a telephone, connect through the Internet and return to a phone on the phone network due to the basic incompatibility of the SS7 and IP protocols. This incompatibility with SS7 has been identified as a major restraint on the growth of Internet Telephony by Frost & Sullivan. PacketPort.com's LinkNet Gateway is a SS7 enabled IP product installed commercially and available for immediate delivery.
PacketPort.com intends to launch a complete line of Voice-over-DSL (VoDSL) products. Digital Subscriber Line or DSL is currently being marketed as a service which provides high-speed Internet access over the existing copper wires of the circuit switched telephone system. Voice-over-DSL, however, also allows the same line to provide multiple lines of Voice or Fax-over-IP service in addition to high-speed Internet. PacketPort.com expects its VoDSL product development to be completed by the first quarter and begin shipping commercially in the second quarter.
PacketPort.com's major competitors are: 3 Com Corporation (NASDAQ: COMS), Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO), Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU), Clarent Corporation (NASDAQ: CLRN), VocalTec (NASDAQ: VOCL), NetSpeak (NASDAQ: NSPK) and Franklin Telecom (AMEX: FCM).
