Fairchild Semiconductor Korea has been honored for its environmental practices at its semiconductor manufacturing plant in Puchon, South Korea. Fairchild was recently awarded the first place Green Energy Award sponsored by the Korean Federation and Environmental Movement and Hankook Ilbo, a leading daily newspaper. They are conducting a national campaign to promote conservation and environmental protection.

Fairchild was chosen for the top award because of its success in reducing its discharge of wastewater, minimizing the use of chemicals, and reducing its use of electricity. Dr. Deok J. Kim, president of Fairchild Semiconductor Korea, explains that a concerted conservation effort at the plant reduced the daily discharge of wastewater by 300 tons by making changes in the manufacturing process.

The sponsoring newspaper warns that limited resources could be drained and industry subjected to more stringent environmental rules if conservation measures are not effective. It cites Fairchild as an example of companies that are saving energy and protecting the environment.

"This award reflects our corporate ethic, our respect for the Korean society, and our concern about the environment everywhere," said Kirk Pond, president and CEO of Fairchild Semiconductor International, whose headquarters are in South Portland, Maine. "When we acquired this business in Puchon seven months ago, we were determined to build good relationships in Korean society. We will respect the environment there as we do at every other Fairchild site throughout the world. We are delighted to be recognized in Korea as a company that cares about the environment."
