REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 8, 1999--

Saba, the company that connects people to learning, today announced a new executive education series featuring leading experts on the impact of the new economy on global companies and their extended workforces. The first seminar in the series, "Developing and Training Employees in the New Economy," was held Tuesday, November 30, in Princeton, New Jersey, and featured author Dr. Peter Cappelli.

The discussions are designed to provide business leaders with access to the latest thinking-and to encourage discussion-about the effect of the new Internet economy on learning throughout extended enterprises. Attendees at the first seminar included a dozen senior executives from Global 5000 companies in telecommunications, financial services, air transport, and professional services.

Cappelli, who is the George Taylor Professor of Management at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and author of "New Deal at Work: Managing the Market-driven Workforce," said businesses must broaden their vision of professional development and include all forms of learning in a holistic approach to attracting and retaining the best employees. Because of the fluidity of today's workforce, he said, it is also important that businesses gain measurable returns on the investments they make in employee education.

"Learning is much more than just training. It is an ongoing process that empowers people throughout the extended enterprise with competencies and skills to improve their own careers, while assuring dynamic returns to businesses," Cappelli said. "Employees and members of the extended workforce will remain highly mobile in the New Economy, but with appropriate and varied learning models, businesses have a better chance both at keeping these people longer, and at knowing exactly what is needed to fill any job at any time."

The next seminar in the series will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, on December 9, and will feature Douglas K. Smith, author of "Make Success Measurable!" His topic will be: "P&L: Performance and Learning." For more information email info@saba.com or call 1-877-Saba-101 or 1-650/696-1758
