United Airlines Flight Center Receives Type 142 Certificate; Simulator Only Training Capability Cuts Training Time and Costs While Enhancing Flight Safety

Business Wire, Feb 3, 1999

DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 2, 1999--The United Airlines Flight Center has received its Type 142 Certificate from the FAA, allowing the flight school to offer customers simulator-only flight training under these tight guidelines.

Simulator-only training eliminates expensive aircraft training and check time. Pilots and flight engineers can meet all FAR 61 and FAR 63 requirements in less time and at lower cost.

With the Type 142 Certificate, the UAL Flight Center now offers simulator-only type rating programs and recurrency training programs for B727, B737-200, B737-300/500, B747-100/200, B747-400, B757/767, B777, DC-8, DC-10 and A319/320/321 aircraft. Flight engineer training programs are available for B747-100/200, B727, DC-8 and DC-10.

Several specialty-training programs are offered, including hazardous materials, emergency, and aircraft differences. The Flight Center has also received full certification from the Australian government, allowing Australian pilots to receive type rating without the additional aircraft training typically required.

"The Type 142 Certificate means that United's training programs are fully standardized. Pilots meeting prerequisites for ground school and simulator time can comply fully with all FAR 61 requirements," said Scott Brennan, director of UAL Services Flight Training. "Having all simulators and training devices FAA approved is especially valuable to our overseas customers, since it allows another country's government to approve United's equipment for use by their carriers to meet their own pilot/FE training requirements."

United's Flight Training Services can design and develop specialty training programs to meet the exact needs of any aircraft operator. Training is available under United Airlines' FAR 121 and 142 certificates.

The United Airlines Flight Center is the largest commercial pilot and crew training facility in the world. It currently employs over 1,000 people, including instructors and staff support employees, flight simulator technicians, engineers, and test pilots. The Flight Center also has the most instructors in the industry, including over 600 pilot instructors, training check airmen, standards captains and academic instructors to conduct simulator training, flight training and proficiency checking.

United Airlines offers pilots and non-pilots a unique opportunity to be an airline pilot for a day in training devices, such as the new 747-400 simulator. The Pilot for A Day program provides a unique opportunity to experience some of the ways professional pilots are trained. Depending on the package selected, the program includes a tour of the Flight Center, simulator briefing and a full flight simulator session.

UAL Services offers a comprehensive network of airline support capabilities throughout the world. Founded in 1995, the division of United Airlines is a leader in providing full support in all areas of airline operations, including line and heavy maintenance services, airport services, flight training, materials loans and borrows, asset management and business services.
