CUHSD to Kick Off Nation's Second District-Wide Effort

to Provide Each Student with Shared Network Access at

the `Digital High School' Celebration Jan. 13

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 11, 1999--To enhance the learning experience of students by sharing technology through wirelessly networking computer resources, Proxim, Inc., (NASDAQ:PROX), and the Campbell Union High School District (CUHSD), headquartered in San Jose, Calif., today announce their recent partnership, the first of its kind in the Western United States. The partnership will formally be introduced Jan. 13 at the district's "Digital High School" celebration.

Proxim is the world's leading supplier of spread spectrum wireless local area networking (LAN) products to both OEMs and wireless solutions providers with its RangeLAN2(TM) product family and RangeLAN802(TM) IEEE 802.11-compatible product line. The CUHSD serves more than 7,000 students through four comprehensive high schools, one continuation high school, and a new comprehensive high school to open this Fall. Two of the district's high schools have been named California Distinguished High Schools, and one, Westmont High School, was recently recognized nationally as a United States Blue Ribbon School.

The Digital High School campaign is a match funds program provided by the California Department of Education to assist high schools in utilizing technology for instruction. The program challenges educators, students and the community to rethink the learning process with a focus on current and future uses of technology. It is the second such effort in the United States from a school district to enable shared learning resources through wireless connectivity. Camp Hill School District (Camp Hill, Pa.), also a Proxim customer, has been using wireless LANs for two years.

CUHSD's program will start at Del Mar High School in San Jose and initially consists of five media carts - each equipped with a Proxim RangeLAN2 access point, six laptop computers containing RangeLAN2 PC cards, and a networked printer. Teachers can reserve the carts to augment existing classroom computers, allowing more students to share computing resources and enhance their learning with such things as in-class Internet research, simulation software for group projects, and creation of multi-media presentations.

"The Digital High School campaign is important for furthering the advancement of our students by delivering to them the advantages of the most advanced technology for learning available today," said Jess Stephens, CUHSD Technology Services administrator. "We chose Proxim because of the robustness of the RangeLAN2 technology, which enables different carts in a single classroom to be on different frequencies for simultaneous learning exercises. Out of the four wireless LAN vendors we called, only Proxim and one other responded. Proxim has been a pleasure to work with."

"We are pleased to extend our industry-leading wireless products and excellent customer service to the Campbell Union High School District for its district-wide effort to augment its teaching processes for its students," said Brian Button, Proxim Sales and Marketing vice president. "Education is an exciting emerging market for Proxim because through real-time network access and shared resources we can help put a computer into the hands of each student for a more enhanced learning experience. We look forward to working with other education institutions which can benefit from the comprehensiveness and flexibility of our wireless solution, as well."

The Digital High School Celebration

The CUHSD's Digital High School kick off celebration will take place Wednesday, Jan. 13, at 3:30 pm at Del Mar High School, 1224 Del Mar Avenue, in San Jose. The ceremony will begin in the school's cafeteria with a presentation by Stephens and Del Mar High School staff members on the vision of the district's Digital High School campaign. The event will then move to the library/media center and a technology-centered classroom for demonstrations of Proxim's wireless LAN technology and other hardware and software specified in the Digital High School plan. For more information, call the CUHSD at (408) 371-0960.

About RangeLAN2

Proxim's RangeLAN2 products operate in the 2.4 gigahertz (GHz) frequency band and utilize frequency hopping spread spectrum radio frequency (RF) technology, which is both highly secure and exceptionally immune to interference. The products are designed to provide the industry's best combination of features for mobile wireless local area networking applications, including high speed, long range, low power consumption, network scalability and advanced network management. Microsoft incorporated RangeLAN2 into its Handheld PC Pro Edition software, because RangeLAN2 is the only solution available today to enable wireless connectivity of small handheld devices, such as those running the Windows CE operating system, because of its smallest form factor and industry-lowest power consumption requirements for improved battery life. RangeLAN2 is certified and complies with the OpenAir(TM) wireless LAN standard set by the Wireless LAN Interoperability Forum (WLIF), a nonprofit organization of more than 25 leading wireless vendors which supports interoperability among members' products.
