HNC Software Awards Scholarships to Local Students At First Annual Tech 200 Event; Leading San Diego High Tech Company Supports Education in Math, Science & Technology

Business Wire, Jan 11, 1999

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 11, 1999--HNC Software (Nasdaq:HNCS) will award each of 12 local high school students with the "HNC Software High-Technology Academic Achievement Award" and a $2,000 scholarship at the first annual Tech 200 Recognition Dinner on Tuesday, Jan. 12, from 6:30-9:30PM, at the San Diego Convention Center.

The event, sponsored by the San Diego Business Journal, honors high-tech companies with substantial economic presence in San Diego. HNC is one of 200 leading technology companies receiving a WAVE (Winning Advances in Vital Enterprises) Award from the journal.

HNC co-sponsored the event in response to the tremendous community support it has received over the last decade. The company also views the program as a continuation of its support of education by encouraging tomorrow's leaders.

"We want to help these brilliant students prepare for rewarding careers in math, science and technology by helping them defray the rising costs of higher education," said Bob North, president and chief executive officer, HNC Software.

The scholarship program, administered by the County Office of Education, invited students from all county schools to participate. Of the 370 applicants who responded, 25 finalists were selected and interviewed.

Scholarship winners were evaluated on their commitment to pursuing university math, science and technology studies. Candidates were also required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.0, and demonstrate a strong appreciation of math and science, a desire to help others and financial need.

"This is an extremely generous gesture on the part of HNC Software," said San Diego County Superintendent of Schools Rudy Castruita. "I'm pleased that the scholarship program attracted such strong interest, and I know the 12 students will prove to be outstanding recipients."

"These students are truly remarkable," North said. "It will be a privilege to present the scholarship and award to each of them."

HNC continues to increase its economic presence as San Diego continues to evolve as the "Silicon Valley of the South." The county has been coined "Technology's Perfect Climate" because the regional technology industry has experienced such explosive growth. This expanding industry is driven by new and changing uses of technology. Educators have recognized this trend and are continuing to offer students increased exposure to opportunities in math, science and technology.

HNC supports this trend and participates in other educational programs such as the "School to Career Program," administered by the County Office of Education. HNC also offers an internship program in conjunction with UCSD, with a number of HNC employees speaking at academic events throughout the country.
