Parametric Technology Standardizes on Intergraph Integration Tools; Speeds Windows NT Applications to Market
Business Wire, Jan 15, 1999
HUNTSVILLE, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 15, 1999--Saying that "no other tools could match Intergraph's performance, speed or reliability," Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC) today became the latest company to standardize on Intergraph Corporation's line of Windows(R)-to-UNIX integration tools. PTC will use Intergraph's Network File System (NFS(R)) client - DiskAccess(TM) - and server - DiskShare(TM) - to speed its development of Windows NT solutions.
"We evaluated all of the top NFS products on the market and no other tools could match Intergraph's performance, speed or reliability. Intergraph offers an extremely stable product that works on multiple platforms," said Glenn Sinclair, hardware partner manager, PTC. "These tools will help maximize the return on our research and development platforms."
PTC develops products for both UNIX and Windows NT operating systems, however; approximately 50 percent of its new business is Windows NT-based. With Intergraph's NFS tools, PTC will be able to provide developers with quick and easy access to resources on both UNIX and Windows NT from a single terminal. NFS, based on the network file system protocol, enables the sharing of files and resources across multiple platforms.
"It is encouraging to see two successful solution vendors such as PTC and Intergraph collaborate to meet the growing demands for the Windows NT platform," said Ajay Sikka, industry marketing manager for engineering at Microsoft Corp. "Microsoft aims to enable lower cost of ownership by helping solution vendors create robust applications that solve mission critical tasks, ease integration across multiple platforms, and improve productivity."
"Intergraph's interoperability tools play well in development areas such as PTC's," said David B. Melvin, executive marketing manager, Intergraph. "These products were originally designed to assist in Intergraph's migration from UNIX to Windows NT. Intergraph was able to port more than 300 software applications to Windows NT while minimizing capital expenditures."
Intergraph's migration began in October of 1991 and encompassed moving its technical applications from UNIX to Windows NT; converting the hardware platform to the Intel processor running Windows NT; and migrating corporate business applications to the NT platform.
In the process, Intergraph formed a close alliance with Microsoft(R) working together on the development of the mini-redirector technology found in DiskAccess and AccessNFS Gateway, a cost-effective, server-based solution. The mini-redirector makes it easier for installable file systems such as NFS to integrate with the operating system.
PTC was also an early supporter of Windows NT. In fact, PTC was the first mechanical design automation vendor to adopt the Windows NT platform.
