ICG Completes Nation's Largest IP Telephony Network; Long Distance Calling Now Available in 214 U.S. Cities

Business Wire, Jan 20, 1999

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 20, 1999--ICG Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:ICGX) today announced that the company has made its mark in the long distance business by putting the finishing touches on its aggressive, five-month domestic rollout of Internet Protocol (IP) long distance service. ICG now offers IP long distance service in 214 U.S. cities, including major metropolitan areas in New York, Illinois, Texas and the District of Columbia.

ICG's IP long distance service now covers more than 90 percent of the long distance traffic in the United States. In completing the rollout, ICG more than doubled the number of cities in service, from 101 cities in November to 113 additional cities, far exceeding its 1998 year-end goal of 166 cities.

After acquiring a nationwide data network with its January 1998 purchase of Netcom, ICG identified IP telephony as a key area in the converging voice and data telephony universe. ICG announced its plans for IP service in March, selected Cisco as its voice over IP vendor in July and began its initial service offering in 31 cities in August.

"A year ago, ICG embarked on a journey to provide competitive IP-based services using advanced Internet Protocol technology," said J. Shelby Bryan, ICG president and chief executive officer. "In less than a year, we announced IP telephony, found an excellent partner to provide the equipment and completed the network. No other competitor has moved this swiftly to bring IP solutions to the marketplace."

ICG's IP customers can make coast-to-coast phone and fax calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week over the company's private data network. The company's leading-edge long distance service, which has been available in California, Colorado and Ohio since August, uses state-of-the-art gateways developed by Cisco Systems.

How IP Long Distance Works

Customers must have Internet access to open an account, and must register any phone or fax numbers they plan to use with the service. The account is opened with a credit card, enabling the customer to use the service at-will with no set-up or minimum usage fees. ICG's IP long distance service is priced at 5.9 cents per minute for calls that originate and terminate on ICG's IP network. Calls made that terminate outside of ICG's network will be priced at 8.9 cents per minute. Customers can use the IP service to access all domestic long distance phone and facsimile numbers. International calling capability is planned for later this year.

Persons interested in signing up for the service or gaining more information on IP telephony can reach ICG at http://www.iplongdistance.com.
