Lucent Technologies to Integrate Its Industry-leading IP Address Management Software With Novell Directory Services
Business Wire, Jan 20, 1999
SNOWBIRD, Utah--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 20, 1999--
Lucent's QIP Enterprise 5.0, Combined with NDS, Streamlines
Time to Implement and Manage IP Infrastructures
Lucent Technologies today announced it will integrate Novell(R), Inc.'s Novell Directory Services(R) (NDS(TM)) with its own QIP(R) Enterprise 5.0 product line, the industry's leading Internet Protocol (IP) address management software. The announcement of the beta availability of this functionality was made in conjunction with Novell's inaugural Global Partner Summit, held here.
Lucent's QIP is used by network managers to automate and manage IP name and address services in mid-to-large enterprises, and Novell's NDS is a multiple-platform, distributed database that stores information about hardware and software resources available within a given network. QIP Enterprise, combined with NDS, will significantly streamline the time required to implement and manage IP infrastructures.
"With this announcement, we continue to demonstrate our commitment to help simplify network management for our customers," said Karyn Mashima, vice president of enterprise networks at Lucent. "The integration of NDS into our QIP Enterprise 5.0 product will provide a turnkey solution for users who wish to easily deploy directory services for administering their IP services infrastructure."
Lucent's high-performance QIP Domain Name Services (DNS) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers can access and store information in a directory service, creating a common, enterprise-wide repository for DNS- and DHCP-related information. QIP's unique capabilities allow network administrators to define primary and secondary directory services servers. In the event of a failure in the primary NDS server, QIP will automatically switch over to the secondary NDS server, providing uninterrupted services to the network consumer. QIP maintains a fully fault-tolerant environment, in non-directory, directory services or mixed environments.
The directory services environment supported by the DNS and DHCP servers provides for both configuration and data to be stored on the directory. The DNS and DHCP servers receive their configurations directly from the server eliminating the need for DNS servers to be pre-configured and making configuration updates much simpler. Lease information from the DHCP servers is added to the directory repository and immediately available to all DNS servers on request. Incremental updates are added to the directory and are only requested by the servers if needed. Adding new DNS and DHCP servers is as simple as pointing them to their primary and secondary directory server.
Today's announcement is the second such initiative between Lucent and Novell in this area. Last fall, the two companies announced the signing of a software license deal that will bundle and integrate NDS with management software for Lucent's high-capacity Cajun(TM) P550(TM) Switch, a Layer 2 switching, Layer 3 routing Ethernet platform. This capability will be delivered by Lucent in the first half of 1999 as an enhanced policy management application.
