Metrowerks' CodeWarrior Embedded Products to Include Sun Microsystems' Jini Technology

Business Wire, Jan 25, 1999

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 25, 1999--Metrowerks Inc., (NASDAQ:MTWKF) (TSE:MWK) (ME:MWK) a leading supplier of software development tools for desktop and embedded systems, today announced that it has entered into a licensing agreement with Sun Microsystems to provide the Jini(tm) technology to licensees of CodeWarrior embedded tools.

The Jini technology will be available as part of CodeWarrior Embedded Systems products for MIPS(R), PowerPC(tm), DSP56800, M-CORE(tm), SH, x86, ColdFire(tm) and 68K processors.

Jini is new technology, announced today, from Sun Microsystems designed to simplify the configuration and access of hardware devices and software services on a network. Jini creates a homogeneous, Java technology-centric view of the network, which makes it possible to add new services or devices to networks with no configuration requirements. It also makes it possible to execute new services without pre-installing software on client machines.

Metrowerks will be the first embedded development tools vendor to license Jini for research and development use and deployment.

"Adding Jini technology to CodeWarrior provides embedded systems developers with a very powerful set of tools with which to develop and deploy Jini-enabled consumer devices," said Mike Clary, general manager, Jini technology, Sun Microsystems. "Metrowerks has a great track record of providing powerful, easy-to-use, state-of-the-art embedded tool technology and platform independent technology such as Java and now Jini."

"As the client-server model migrates to the consumer electronics markets, technologies such as Jini provide an excellent opportunity for the connection and management of discrete, heterogeneous consumer devices," said Greg Galanos, president and chief technology officer, Metrowerks. "We are pleased to make Jini available with our Java tools and our embedded products, thus enhancing developer tools for a connected world."

Availability

The Jini technology will be made available as part of each new revision of CodeWarrior Embedded Products as they become available.
