Phoenix Technologies Demonstrates Enhanced Remote System Management With Sun's Jini Technology

Business Wire, Jan 25, 1999

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 25, 1999--Phoenix Technologies(TM) Ltd. (Nasdaq: PTEC), the global leader in foundation and connectivity IP software, today announced its support for Sun Microsystems' new Jini(TM) technology architecture, an instant networking solution for connecting all types of information appliances.

During Sun Microsystems' Jini launch today at the Sheraton Palace Hotel, in San Francisco, Phoenix(R) is demonstrating how Jini technology can be used to remotely access information appliances or PCs before the operating system has loaded or when the operating system fails to execute. This capability will allow for remote diagnostics, system management and control of the networked client.

Sun's Jini technology is a system architecture that supports a flexible, networked digital environment comprised of computing, storage, display, entertainment and communication devices. Jini technology provides the capability of quickly and easily forming an impromptu community of computers and information appliances that can communicate with one another and with the network.

With Jini technology, Phoenix's remote pre-boot system management solutions can provide a disabled PC or information appliance the ability to find an appropriate support location and access it. The user at the remote location can then take control for diagnosis and repair of the system as common problems occur. For today's technology demonstration, Phoenix has linked this remote capability to Computer Associates' UniCenter System Management Software to show how remote preboot management can be achieved for existing systems.

"With Jini there is now an effective way to meet users' emerging need to easily network many different types of intelligent devices anytime, anywhere," said Laurent Gharda, vice president of marketing, Phoenix Technologies. "Our goal is to help manufacturers bring more robust products to market sooner using our software foundations and semiconductor IP expertise."

With its wide support for connectivity standards, Phoenix can provide manufacturers the options they need to make advanced connectivity a built-in feature in a broad range of information appliances and PCs.

"We welcome Phoenix Technologies among the leading technology companies supporting of Jini," stated Mark Tolliver, President, Consumer and Embedded Software, Sun Microsystems. "With Phoenix's broad OEM leadership, we believe manufacturers will have the edge they need to get products to market faster and with Jini technology, manage them more efficiently."
