New RFID Technology Offers Libraries Advanced Intelligence; State-Of-The Art System To Be Unveiled At Philadelphia Library Show

Business Wire, Jan 29, 1999

THOROFARE, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 29, 1999--Checkpoint Systems, Inc., (NYSE: CKP), today announced the release of the first-ever, fully integrated, library collection management system built upon state-of-the RFID technology. With the release of the Intelligent Library System (ILS), Checkpoint, already an industry leader in loss-prevention, leads the way for libraries to integrate the control and management of collections. The new system will be showcased at the American Library Association Show, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, this weekend, January 30 - February 1, 1999.

The heart of the system is a state-of-the-art Circulation Circuit label permanently affixed to each item of a collection. The Circulation Circuit is a paper-thin, flexible label with an embedded integrated circuit capable of storing information unique to each item along with library-specific information. The new system integrates information stored on the chip with the library circulation system, which includes patron information. This new technology streamlines the management of the library collection and offers the opportunity to enhance customer service and loyalty.

Inventory is accomplished rapidly with the ILS hand-held wand, does not require line-of-sight reading, and is fed into the circulation system for automatic update. Security of the library's collection is enhanced through the unique-item detail carried on the tag. For many libraries, this new RFID technology also offers the opportunity to implement automated patron check-out and check-in.

The ILS is a complete library security and collection management system integrated with circulation systems through application software. Components of the system include: Circulation Circuits , Patron Self Check-Out Station, Inventory Wand, Intelligent Sensors, Circulation Circuit Programmer, Staff Station Reader, and an Application Software Program. Checkpoint has designed and manufactured all units which provides a complete turn-key operation. In addition, leading library software manufacturers recognize the ILS as the premiere solution to collection management and have written modules to enable full integration.

Checkpoint Systems, Inc. (NYSE: CKP) is the world's leading provider of radio frequency systems and tags for library and retail securing solutions with an international sales service and support network, production of multi-billion tags a year and 350,000 installations worldwide.
