Business Wire, July 21, 1999

OAKLAND, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 21, 1999--

This Thursday, July 22, BART will host the fourth in a month-long series of "Customer Focus" events that center on Capitol Corridor service between Sacramento and San Jose.

Thursday's event will be held at the Rockridge BART Station, between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Free California Fun Guide coupon books and Capitol Corridor schedules will be available, and there will be a drawing for a pair of round-trip tickets on the Capitol Corridor. The California Fun Guide -- a money-saving family getaway guide -- contains 24 destination offers and special ticket price savings for Capitol Corridor and Amtrak destinations.

BART Customer Service Representatives will also be on hand, meeting and greeting customers and explaining BART programs.

Capitol Corridor offers six daily round-trip trains, seven days a week, between Sacramento and Oakland, with three round-trip dailies to San Jose and one to Auburn/Colfax. Dedicated connecting bus service is provided to outlying areas. The trains are operated by Amtrak and managed by BART for the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority, the governing body that represents counties and transit districts along the corridor.

The schedule of the remaining BART Customer Focus events in July is:

Thursday, July 22, Rockridge BART Station, 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.

Thursday, July 29, Fremont BART Station, 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.

The Capitol Corridor has a rich history of train service, beginning as numbered trains operated by Southern Pacific Railway in 1879, then becoming The Senator, The Legislator, The Governor, The Statesman and the El Dorado. In the Roaring 20s, SP operated 11 trains along the Corridor. By June 1962, when SP discontinued service, only The Senator was still in service. Today, in addition to the Capitol Corridors, Amtrak operates the California Zephyr, from Emeryville to Chicago, and the Coast Starlight, fromm Los Angeles to Seattle, along the same route.
