Business Wire, July 26, 1999
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 26, 1999--
Cygnus Solutions, the leader in open source software, today announced a strategic agreement with Sun Microsystems to deliver its industry leading GNUPro(TM) software development tools for Solaris(1) 7 operating environment for the UltraSPARC and Intel 32-bit processors.
Software developers will now have access to a common set of high-performance tools that facilitate development of applications on and for Sun Solaris operating environment. GNUPro allows developers to write software that is portable across multiple operating systems and microprocessors.
As part of the agreement, Cygnus will implement full 64-bit UltraSPARC support to enhance the existing Solaris SPARC version of the popular open source GNUPro tools. In addition, Cygnus will port GNUPro to Solaris for the Intel 32-bit processor. Both toolchains will support multi-threaded debugging capabilities. When this work is complete, developers will have the freedom to use GNUPro on all current Solaris environments, including future versions from Sun.
"Our agreement with Cygnus makes it easier for open source developers to take advantage of the Solaris operating environment for world-class reliability and scalability," said Brian Croll, director of product marketing, Solaris Software, Sun Microsystems. "The GNUPro multi-platform development tools will provide a common development environment for Solaris and Linux across SPARC and Intel platforms."
"This agreement extends the availability of Cygnus GNUPro tools and developer support to software developers wanting to take advantage of Sun's 64-bit platform," said senior vice president, Tom Barton, Cygnus Solutions. "As the industry moves to GNU-based technology, Cygnus, unlike other sources of GNU, retains the strategic relationships necessary for ensuring the availability of the latest GNU technology."
