OATH Announces Results of First-Ever Olympic Athlete-Sponsored Symposium on IOC reform

Following is the consensus document on Olympic Reform created at the first OATH - Olympic Advocates Together Honourably Symposium June 11 - June 13, 1999 in New York City:

OATH will leverage the results from the conference to put the voice of Olympic athletes on the IOC map and to forge a global group of Olympic athletes and advocates to serve as catalysts of systemic change reflecting the interests of all Olympians.

Vision

Our vision is sport that is ethical, and contributes to the peaceful fulfillment of human potential.

Mission

OATH is an independent, international organization and forum for athletes and advocates.

OATH is committed to restoring and maintaining the values underlying the Fundamental Principles of the Olympic Charter.

OATH promotes ethical guardianship, responsible governance and effective management of the Olympic Movement.

Statements of Consensus

1) WE, athletes and advocates, affirm and support the Olympic ideals

of peace, mutual understanding, friendship, solidarity and fair

play as embodied in the Olympic Charter as a public trust.

2) WE recognize the role and responsibility of the International

Olympic Committee in organizing and managing the Olympic

Movement, and we challenge it to adhere to the Fundamental

Principles embodied in the Olympic Charter.

3) WE endorse and promote the following principles of ethical

guardianship for the Olympic Movement:

i) Responsible governance;

ii) Inclusive;

iii) Transparent;

iv) Accountable;

v) Democratic.

4) WE believe that the creation of an international and independent

organization is necessary to restore, preserve and promote the

Olympic ideals for present and future generations.

5) WE support the creation of OATH, its vision and mission.

Vision

We, therefore, believe that sport is a public trust that requires ethical guardianship, which includes but is not limited to: - Respectful of athletes; - Respectful of sport; - Athletes as active participants in the role of decision-making; - Accountability; - Transparency; - Inclusiveness; - Education; - Physical and moral development of youth; -
