InstallShield Software Corp. today announced the availability of InstallFromTheWeb(R) (IFTW) 3.0, a one-step download and installation solution for Microsoft(R) Windows(R)-based application distribution via the Internet.

IFTW 3.0 is designed for enterprises that distribute large applications to internal users over intranets and for software developers who want to Web-enable products for sale and distribution via the Internet. In addition, InstallShield incorporates support for CyberSource SmartCert(TM) in IFTW 3.0 to provide rights-based authentication for online product distribution.

The IFTW 3.0 Wizard Web-enables installation and application packages for a seamless software download and installation process. Installs that are IFTW-enabled allow users to install applications from the server to their system in one step, and IFTW 3.0 gives users constant feedback and progress indicators that monitor the file retrieval process. Support for selective component installations lets end-users download/install only the desired components and files.

For software developers dependent on the Internet for software sales and distribution, IFTW 3.0 is an indispensable tool. Commerce Ready with CyberSource

InstallFromTheWeb 3.0 also incorporates support for CyberSource Corp.'s digital certificate technology. A digital ticketing system, CyberSource SmartCert technology provides rights-based authentication for distributing products online. An end user makes a purchase from a Web merchant and is issued a digital ticket for each product. The digital ticket is then sent transparently by the IFTW application to CyberSource for validation prior to the end user obtaining the product.

Ensure Download Integrity and Reduce Support Calls with IFTW 3.0

IFTW 3.0 offers built-in functionality that essentially eliminates the problems associated with interrupted file transfers resulting in possible file corruption: -0-

     -- Dynamic Reconnect: If the external Internet connection breaks
        during download, IFTW 3.0 automatically switches to any
        available mirror site and continues to retrieve the file
        without interruption.  No end-user interaction is required.

     -- Error Recovery: In the event of a broken connection to the
        end-user's system, an error recovery system continues the
        file-copying process where the break occurred once the
        connection is re-established. Files copied before the
        connection was broken will not be re-copied.

     -- File Verification: IFTW 3.0 uses CRC-checking to verify each
        file copied to the end-user system against the original on the
        Web server.  Corrupted files are replaced so the installation
        can successfully run without user intervention.

The IFTW 3.0 Client installs automatically for Netscape(R) 4.x users. It also uses the Netscape JAR installation manager (SmartUpdate) to automatically trigger client installation for users of Netscape 4.0 or later version browsers. The enhanced HTML template checks for browser and client and displays messages and dialogs specific to the active browser. IFTW 3.0 also offers improved Server-to-Client communication using end-user information collected from Web pages to customize the software's download and installation.
