Rio Tinto and BHP Confirm Talks

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 15, 1999--
Rio Tinto plc (NYSE: RTP) today made the following announcement:
Rio Tinto and BHP have confirmed that there have been discussions between them concerning a possible joint venture of their respective iron ore operations.
The two parties say that no agreement has been reached and they do not know when or if there will be a satisfactory conclusion of the discussions. Furthermore, they do not expect to make any further announcements over the next several weeks.
