GartnerGroup's Dataquest Says Business Intelligence Industry Riding the Wave of Packaged Applications' Popularity
Business Wire, June 28, 1999
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 28, 1999--
Worldwide Business Intelligence Applications Market
Grew 42 Percent in 1998
As more IT managers look to purchase packaged software solutions rather than make their own, the business intelligence (BI) market has benefited as worldwide BI applications revenue reached $602.3 million in 1998, an increase of 42 percent over 1997 revenue, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE:IT).
The market will continue to experience strong growth, as the worldwide BI applications market is forecast to reach $3.2 billion in 2003.
"The availability of packaged business intelligence applications has been growing substantially as data warehouses have been maturing and management focus is shifting to real-time decision support applications," said Jose Sta. Ana, senior industry analyst for Dataquest's Database and Data Warehousing Worldwide program.
The proliferation of the Internet, corporate intranets, and extranets are impacting almost everyone in the enterprise and is making the concept of BI to the masses a reality.
"With this, not only analysts and knowledge workers can have access to BI support, but also ordinary users of these BI applications such as line managers and operations personnel," said Mr. Sta. Ana. "This now requires vendors to provide two standard interfaces: the traditional Windows, client/server interface, as well as a thin-client, browser version."
Because this market is relatively young, many small companies are participating in the BI applications marketplace. Dataquest analysts said larger vendors will begin to make a presence because of the tremendous potential for growth.
"There is a shake-up coming as the market begins to mature, with bigger players joining the fray. Established enterprise applications vendors, BI tools vendors, as well as database and data warehousing vendors, are all eyeing this market," Mr. Sta. Ana said.
BI applications are defined as packaged software products that analyze data, usually but not necessarily from a data warehouse or data market, to generate preformatted reports and/or screens in support of management decision making.
Additional information on the BI market is available in the Dataquest Perspective "Business Intelligence: Riding the Packaged Applications Wave." This report looks at the current size of the BI applications market and how it will grow in the future. The report also discusses the segments in the data warehousing market that have the greatest potential for growth in the next five years.
