Connectix Corporation Announces Connectix Virtual Game Station Version 1.2
Business Wire, March 12, 1999
SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 12, 1999--Connectix Corporation announced it is shipping Connectix Virtual Game Station(tm) Version 1.2 which features improved games compatibility, enhanced anti-piracy technology, and support for the DexDrive(tm) saved-game format. For the tens of thousands of current users of Versions 1.1 and 1.0, the 1.2 updater was posted today on the company's Web site, www.connectix.com.
Connectix Virtual Game Station (CVGS) enables many popular Sony(R) PlayStation(R) games to run on Apple's G3 Macintosh(R) computers, including desktops, PowerBooks(tm) and iMacs(tm). This new software-only emulation product builds on the company's success with Connectix Virtual PC(tm), which enables Macintosh users to run Windows applications. CVGS continues to be widely available throughout the United States and Canada with an estimated street price of $49.
"We believe consumers will be pleased with the enhanced compatibility and functionality of Version 1.2," stated Roy McDonald, President of Connectix. Connectix maintains a list of games it recommends for use with Connectix Virtual Game Station at www.virtualgamestation.com. The list was updated to reflect the improved compatibility of Version 1.2, adding a dozen top-50 titles and increasing the total recommended title count to nearly 200 games. (Top-50 ranking based on averaging full year 1998 and December 1998 PC Data unit sales rankings.)
"DexDrive support was one of the most frequently requested features among Version 1.1 users," continued McDonald. DexDrive files are stored game states similar to the ones created by users when they save a game during PlayStation play. These saved game states contain information such as what level the player has reached. They are not saved copies of the game itself. CVGS can now read DexDrive files using the same interface it uses to read ordinary saved game states. This allows users who download DexDrive files to begin play at points in the game represented by the saved state, or to play with enhanced capabilities. One popular location for PlayStation DexDrive downloads is the site sponsored by InterAct, www.dexchange.net/playstation.
> Connectix also announced significant progress on the Windows version of CVGS and also that a recent court ruling allowed Connectix to continue this work. On March 11, 1999 the San Francisco Federal District Court rejected three Sony requests with regard to Connectix Virtual Game Station (CVGS). Sony's latest filing related specifically to the ongoing development of the Windows version of CVGS. Sony had asked the court to require Connectix: 1) to cease all use of all copies of the Sony PlayStation BIOS in Connectix' possession; 2) to deliver all copies of this BIOS to Sony counsel; and 3) to deliver all Windows CVGS prototypes in so far as their development involved use of this BIOS. The court rejected all of these requests. The court did instruct Connectix not use the BIOS in ongoing Windows development for twenty (20) days until another hearing can be held. "We believe we are in a stage of development where progress will not be affected by this narrow stricture. We are pleased that the court has for a second time rejected Sony's attempt to broadly restrict our efforts through CVGS to give consumers more flexibility in how they use their PlayStation games," commented McDonald.
