HP Announces New HP Jornada 680 Handheld PC; HP Jornada Family Line Now Provides a Windows CE Color Handheld to Answer All Mobile Computing Needs

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 17, 1999-- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced the HP Jornada 680 Handheld PC, the third product in its comprehensive line of Windows CE color handheld products. The HP Jornada family now provides a full range of mobile devices that fulfill the needs of all mobile professionals.
An enhancement of the HP 600 series palmtop PCs, the HP Jornada 680 Handheld PC offers mobile professionals improved connectivity, portability and functionality.

HP expects to introduce the HP Jornada 680 Handheld PC at CeBIT `99 in Hanover, Germany, on March 18. The HP Jornada 680 Handheld PC runs Microsoft(R) Windows CE Handheld PC Professional Edition software, displays 256 brilliant colors on a 6.5-inch screen and incorporates a type-comfortable keyboard -- 76 percent of the size of a normal PC keyboard -- using responsive desktop-style keys and a sturdier docking solution, all in a smaller, thinner, lighter package.
At only 1.1 pounds and 7.4 inches x 3.7 inches x 1.3 inches, the HP Jornada 680 Handheld PC travels easily in a coat pocket or purse. Its 8-hour battery life(1) and improved performance (133MHz) enable longer and faster access to information. The exclusive HP quick pad gives users greater flexibility in capturing, storing and viewing information. The HP viewer gives an all-in-one screen overview of calendar, contacts and task information for fast access.
The HP Jornada 680 Handheld PC has a built-in 56Kbps v.90 modem, enabling users to stay in touch wherever they go via easy access to e-mail and the Web. In addition, the user-friendly HP dial-up software application assists with setting up modem connections.
Applications to Enhance User Productivity
The HP Jornada 680 Handheld PC ships with a rich suite of useful applications that allow users to manage their financial information(2), view files or e-mail attachments in 35 file formats, manage their GSM phone book(3), send and receive faxes, do mathematical conversions, handle and annotate images, and print to printers that use the standard Printer Control Language (PCL).
U.S. Availability, Pricing and Support
The HP Jornada 680 Handheld PC, expected to be available in North America in April for an estimated U.S. street price of about $899,(4) is backed by a one-year limited warranty. In addition, an upgrade is expected to be available in the United States in May for the HP 600 series palmtop PCs.
