GGX Announces Support for Sun's Jini Architecture; Will Provide Imaging, Printing Services for Next-Generation Office Peripherals
Business Wire, March 24, 1999
WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 24, 1999--GammaGraphX, Inc. (GGX(R)) announced that it will support Sun Microsystems' Jini(TM) architecture, providing easy and efficient use of its imaging and printing software products with future office peripherals that support the Jini architecture. Sun's Jini(TM) has been characterized as the next revolution in networking. The Jini(TM) infrastructure provides resources for executing Java language programs, communication methods for programs and data, and the ability to find and utilize services on a network. In the same way that network interfaces allow exchange of data between systems, Jini interfaces provide a means for offering and requesting services over a network. Some of its essential advantages include: -0-
--providing the ability to configure the software and hardware necessary for performing a task, dynamically across the network --the ability for any Jini-compliant resource to be hot-plugged -- making resources easier to manage, with minimal IT intervention --adoption by significant peripheral industry participants, including Canon, HP, Sharp, Xerox, Motorola, and Computer Associates
-0-
With the Jini Architecture, GGX software services will be completely platform independent -- they will run on any Java Virtual Machine (JVM) environment. This allows the services to support office application environments such as Win NT/Win98 and Solaris, embedded real-time kernels such as PSOS, Inferno, Qnx or VRTX, and `micro' operating systems used in PDAs and hand-held communications devices. This flexibility will allow licensing of GGX products for embedded devices or for other Jini-compliant applications, such document management or ERP systems.
GGX plans to extend current products and develop a new class of document servers -- Java programs that adhere to Jini specifications and provide support for simple and complex workflows associated with paper-based information. Jini provides the software layer for service-to-service communications and event processing. GGX will add value by providing software services to support device handling, image processing, workflow management, and transaction monitoring, as well as interfaces to distribution services such as web publishing, faxing, or email. Many of these services are present in GGX's current imaging and printing products.
Additional information on how GGX expects to take advantage of Sun's Jini architecture is available in a white paper, entitled "Designing a Digital Document Server" available from GGX.
