What will happen when any governmled "God's Eyes for Sale," TR reports that spy's eye views are set to flood the marketplace. It could be good for business, but what will it do for terrorism and privacy in the 21st century?

"Should we worry about satellite surveillance of private citizens?" asked John Benditt, editor-in-chief, Technology Review. "What happens when almost anyone can look right down into your backyard, without your knowing he's doing it? This is definitely a situation where technological innovation, pushed by a variety of motives, is expanding much faster than we as a society can manage."

The first of these images hit the World Wide Web last summer via www.terraserver.com, a Web-based user's guide of high-resolution satellite images of prints of your hometown, plus cities in 60 other countries. The site was developed by Microsoft, Compaq and Kodak, which tout it as the largest database of high-resolution satellite images on the Internet. The site sells satellite images that resolve objects as small as two-meters across for as little as $10 each.

Technology Review will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year, making it the oldest technology magazine in the world. Relaunched in 1998, as "MIT's Magazine of Innovation," Technology Review focuses on the latest, most important technological innovations across a wide range of fields, including biotech, nanotech and information technology. Published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Technology Review now serves a greatly expanded audience, providing information and analysis of leading-edge technologies and their potential impact on science, business and society.

The magazine Technology Review is available on newsstands and on-line at www.techreview.com.
