Stein Mart, Inc. Re-Elects Board of Directors

Stein Mart, Inc. (Nasdaq:SMRT) today re-elected its current board of directors and added one new board member during the Company's 1999 annual meeting of stockholders.

Stein Mart executives Jay Stein, chairman and chief executive officer, and John H. Williams, Jr., president and chief operating officer, were re-elected as directors. Also re-elected were Alvin R. "Pete" Carpenter, president and chief executive officer of CSX Transportation, Inc.; Albert Ernest, president, Albert Ernest Enterprises and former president of Barnett Banks, Inc.; Mitchell W. Legler, Esquire; Michael D. Rose, chairman, Midareo Investments and former chairman, Promus Hotel Corporation; and James H. Winston, chairman, LPMC.

Newly elected was Linda McFarland Farthing, former president and director of Friedman's; and former president and director of The Cato Corporation.
