Business Wire, May 19, 1999
ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 19, 1999--
Leading Internet service provider MindSpring Enterprises, Inc. (Nasdaq:MSPG) is now offering high-speed cable modem Internet access in the Columbus, Ga. area. This brand-new service allows customers to connect to the Internet up to 50 times faster than a standard dial-up connection. As always, MindSpring will provide 24-hour, toll-free customer support. Cable access customers also will have access to MindSpring's dial-up service in more than 700 cities nationwide.
"MindSpring is excited to extend this state-of-the-art service to Columbus," said MindSpring's Founder and Chief Executive Officer Charles Brewer. "The ability for customers to access the Internet at very high speeds in their own homes was unimagined a few years ago, will become commonplace over the next decade, but is available from MindSpring in Columbus today."
With MindSpring Cable Modem Service, customers can maintain a fast connection to the Internet using the cable television network, keeping telephone lines free for voice traffic. When the computer is on, so is the MindSpring service, providing a high-speed, "always-on" connection to the Internet. The service is available 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition, the connection will not interfere with customers' existing cable television service.
The service includes 3 e-mail accounts, 10MB of web hosting space, and access to all MindSpring-supported Usenet news groups.
MindSpring also plans to initiate Cable Modem Service in Augusta, Ga., Charleston, S.C and Panama City, Fla., later this year when MindSpring's third party network service provider upgrades its infrastructure in those cities. In March, MindSpring began offering the service in Montgomery, Ala.
The service costs $39.95 per month with a one-time installation fee of $149.95, which includes installation of all equipment and service. The cable modem is available for lease at $13 per month.
