CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 30, 1999--
Coverage Begins on Wednesday, May 5
As refugees flee Kosovo by the thousands, WLS-AM news veteran Steve Scott will deliver live, first-hand accounts of refugees struggling to survive and American troops fighting to protect their right to live. Scott, the first Chicago radio reporter to cover the war live, begins reporting on Wednesday, May 5, 1999 from aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt off the coast of Albania.
Scott will file live news reports during the popular Don Wade and Roma Show as well as other WLS-AM programming. Additionally, he will file updates for ABC Radio Network News and other ABC radio affiliates across the country.
Scott will begin his eight-day stint with one-on-one interviews with American troops, including exclusive interviews with Chicagoland servicemen and women. As health conditions approach dangerous levels, Scott will examine the mental and physical conditions of life in an overcrowded Albanian refugee camp during an overnight stay.
"This war is having a direct impact on Chicago, with Chicago servicemen and women putting their lives on the line for freedom. We believe it is our responsibility to cover the events since many of our listeners have family members greatly affected by this war," said Zemira Z. Jones, president and general manager of ABC Radio Chicago.
WLS-AM is scheduled to produce a Kosovo documentary upon Scott's return to the States. Scott stated, "Chicago is home of the largest Serbian community in the United States and also has a large ethnic Albanian population. That makes the live coverage WLS-AM will be providing even more important for our listeners."
WLS-AM is owned and operated by ABC Radio Chicago which also includes ESPN Radio 1000, WXCD-FM, WRDZ-AM and WDDZ-AM.
