SGI Selects VERITAS Software as its Preferred Provider for Backup

and HSM Products and Ports VERITAS Volume Manager to its IRIX

VERITAS(R) Software Corporation (Nasdaq:VRTS), the leading provider of end-to-end storage management solutions, and SGI (NYSE:SGI), a leading supplier of visual computing and high-performance systems, today announced an agreement to deliver VERITAS Software's leading backup and HSM (hierarchical storage management) products to enterprise computing customers who need to manage their rapidly expanding amount of enterprise data.

The Companies also today announced plans to form a strike team to investigate the development of a journaled file system solution for Linux(tm) (see related announcement dated today).

Under the agreement, VERITAS Software will become SGI's preferred provider for backup and HSM products, working with SGI and its enterprise customers in the UNIX(R) server, supercomputer and high-end Windows NT(R) workstation markets. SGI will port VERITAS Software's leading on-line storage management software, VERITAS Volume Manager(tm), to its IRIX(R) platform, and will begin selling VERITAS NetBackup and VERITAS HSM (Hierarchical Storage Manager) products under the SGI(tm) Bandwidth Solutions Program. Through this program, SGI delivers premier software and hardware, offering a single point for ordering and support.

As part of the agreement, SGI will port VERITAS Volume Manager and its graphical user interface to operate with SGI's XFS(tm) journaled file system in the IRIX operating system environment. This integration is designed to provide on-line disk and storage management features that allow key business-critical applications, such as decision support and enterprise resource planning (ERP), to be kept online and available to users at all times.

In addition, SGI plans to package VERITAS NetBackup and VERITAS HSM for IRIX with its enterprise-level Origin(tm) servers, and plans to make these products available as preferred products through SGI's Bandwidth Solutions Program.
