Cleveland-Cliffs Makes Announcement

CLEVELAND--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 25, 1999--

Cleveland-Cliffs Inc today announced that James A. Trethewey has been named Senior Vice President-Operations Services. He will have corporate responsibility for the Company's safety, information technology, purchasing and environmental management functions.

Mr. Trethewey, 54, who has 32 years of service in the mining industry, joined Cleveland-Cliffs in 1972 as a financial analyst in the Company's former divisional headquarters in Ishpeming, Michigan. He has had a number of progressively more responsible financial control positions, including mine controller of the former Sherman Mine in Canada, supervisor-financial analysis, and group controller-North American Iron Ore Operations. He was elected corporate controller in 1986 and a vice president in 1988. He assumed operational responsibilities in 1994 and was named to his previous position of Vice President-Operations Services in 1997.

Active in civic affairs and an advocate for educational advancement, Mr. Trethewey is a charter member of the Michigan Technological University Academy of Business. He serves as a director of the LS & I Railroad Company, and is active in the National Mining Association and American Iron and Steel Institute. He obtained a bachelor of science degree from Michigan Technological University and a masters in business administration from Baldwin Wallace College.

Mr. Trethewey and his wife Delores, reside in North Olmsted, Ohio. They have three daughters, Suzann, Nicole and Danielle.

Cleveland-Cliffs is the largest supplier of iron ore products to the North American steel industry and is developing a significant ferrous metallics business. Subsidiaries of the Company manage six iron ore mines in North America and hold equity interests in five of the mines. Cliffs has a major iron ore reserve position in the United States, is a substantial iron ore merchant, and plans to start-up a joint-venture plant in Trinidad to produce high-quality iron briquettes in the second quarter of 1999.
