Yahoo! Auctions Surpasses One Million Simultaneous Daily Auctions; Yahoo! Rolls Outs Four Additional World Auction Services
Business Wire, Nov 1, 1999
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 1, 1999--
Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO) today announced that Yahoo! (R) Auctions (http://auctions.yahoo.com) has exceeded one million simultaneous daily auctions, with more than 125,000 items submitted each day in more than 3,600 diverse categories.
At Yahoo! Auctions, consumers can find a wide variety of items in popular categories such as Automobiles, Coins, Stamps, Trading Cards, Comic Books and other collectibles. Currently, Yahoo! Auctions is the fastest-growing, globally-branded auction site on the Internet, and recent high-profile auctions have included the sale of the Yahoo! Pagan Racing Indy Car for $400,000.
Additionally, Yahoo! recently expanded its international presence through new auction services in Brazil, Denmark, Hong Kong and Korea. This brings Yahoo! Auctions' world auction services to more than 14 over the last seven months, reinforcing Yahoo!'s position as the most extensive network of globally-branded, localized online auctions services in the world. With Yahoo! Auctions, sellers and buyers can now conveniently market items in 11 languages around the globe. Yahoo! Japan Auctions, which launched on Sept. 29, 1999, is currently one of the leading person-to-person auction sites in Japan with more than 30,000 simultaneous daily auctions.
"Yahoo! offers a uniquely comprehensive, global and integrated commerce platform for sellers to distribute their products in multiple formats to the world's largest consumer audience," said Tony Surtees, vice president and general manager of commerce at Yahoo!. "From establishing a Yahoo! Store to selling products in Yahoo! Shopping and distributing merchandise through Yahoo! Auctions, we enable users to build their businesses on the Web. Our commerce solutions work together to allow retailers of all size to test new products, new releases, new markets and find the right pricing levels. Yahoo! is the place people know they can come to find, compare, buy or sell almost anything they want, the way they want, whenever and wherever they want."
Building a Powerful Web Presence
"We have been working with Yahoo! for more than six months now and have found their integrated commerce platform and consumer reach to be a powerful complement to our own 56 million household television promotional platform," said Shop At Home, Inc. (Nasdaq: SATH) President and CEO Kent Lillie. "With the combination of Yahoo! Store and Yahoo! Auctions we are able to choose the sales venue most appropriate for each of our products. Our relationship with Yahoo! has helped generate excitement for our Millennium Time Capsule charity auctions to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and I expect Yahoo! to play an integral role in building brand recognition and traffic as we move forward."
Stay-at-Home Mom Has Twice the Fun Now
"As a mother of twin five-year-old daughters, I was struggling with the decision whether to work or stay at home with my children. When I found Yahoo! Auctions my struggle was over and I was able to do both," said Jennifer Renaud. "I've been a seller on Yahoo! Auctions exclusively for almost a year, and it's been the greatest thing I could have done. I was looking for a reliable and seller-friendly atmosphere and I found it. Yahoo! Auctions offered me tools to achieve my goals, including access to clubs of my peers and fellow sellers as a support group. Yahoo! Auctions allowed me to turn my love of jewelry and collectibles into a second-family income and provided me the opportunity to be a stay-at-home mom."
Student & Entrepreneur
"Yahoo! was an Internet company long before they offered an auctions site, so they know what people want and how to handle the millions of people coming online everyday," said Christine Jolly, founder of Earthworks. " I am putting myself through college by selling jewelry exclusively on Yahoo! Auctions. I have tried other venues, but Yahoo! has, by far, been the most profitable for me. At 22, I am running a business and hiring people to handle all the sales as a result of launching a successful business on Yahoo! Auctions. It's a great feeling."
Direct to Customers across the Web
"Yahoo! offers a high-quality auction service with the greatest exposure, all at zero cost to the seller. In addition to having the technical ability to operate such a site, Yahoo! continues to expand the functionality and user-friendly nature of Yahoo! Auctions to enable businesses, large or small, to reach customers all over the world," said Sean Wainwright, CEO and vice president of Dynadirect.com, an Internet-based business offering brand name products from the manufacturer at wholesale prices. In addition to having a Yahoo! Store, Dynadirect.com currently offers hundreds of items through Yahoo! Auctions. "By taking full advantage of all that Yahoo! has to offer, our company has grown tremendously and we feel confident in saying that no other relationship would have yielded such success."
