In 1994 Mr. Clifford returned to Melbourne in 1996 tollowing the re-organization of Rio Tinto in 1997, Mr. Clifford became Chief Executive Energy and has been based in London since April1999. He is a Director of Rio Tinto Limited and Rio Tinto plc.

Born in South Australia in 1947, Mr Clifford is a graduate of Melbourne University with a First Class Honors Degree in Engineering (Mining), and a Master of Engineering Science Degree. He is currently a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy Chairman of the Coal Industry Advisory Board of the International Energy Agency.

He is married with 2 daughters and lives in London.
