Trend Micro Ships Updated Version of Award-Winning Virus Protection for Lotus Notes on Windows NT
Business Wire, Oct 11, 1999
CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 11, 1999--
ScanMail for Lotus Notes 2.0 adds file blocking feature for
virus alerts and non-productive email attachments in
addition to powerful new protection features and performance
enhancements
Trend Micro, Inc. (Nasdaq:TMIC)(Japan OTC: 4704), the leader in centrally managed Internet virus protection and the only antivirus vendor with Lotus Premium Partner status, today announced shipment of its Domino R5-compatible Lotus Notes virus protection software on Windows NT (Intel), ScanMail(R) for Lotus Notes V2.0.
ScanMail 2.0 provides enhanced protection by incorporating a new file blocking feature for emergency virus alert situations (which can also be used to block bandwidth- consuming non-productive email such as personal greeting cards), automatically cleaning virus-infected zipped file attachments, and detecting potentially malicious Notes scripts. In addition, several new techniques have been incorporated to enhance performance and maximize bandwidth. Several eliminate redundant file scanning (incremental scanning and "smart scanning"), while others enable administrators to adjust their Notes configuration settings for optimum bandwidth utilization (eMail Traffic Monitor).
According to the 1999 ICSA Computer Virus Prevalence Study, more than 50 percent of viruses today are spread through email and groupware attachments. Protecting the mail system at the Notes server is the most efficient way to eliminate the spread of viruses and reduce the cost of virus protection.
ScanMail for Lotus Notes is a native Notes application that detects and cleans viruses from Notes mail in real-time at the email router, in shared databases, and during Notes replication so administrators can be assured that all possible points of infection are being tightly monitored and protected.

Protection Enhancements
-- Emergency File Blocking -- allows administrators to block
incoming files by file name, type, etc., while still permitting
other non-threatening email to pass through. During email virus
alert situations (such as this year's Melissa and
Worm.Explore.Zip crisis), administrators can use the emergency
file blocking to feature to block emails with suspicious file
attachments instead of being forced to shut the email system down
to protect the system. This feature can also be used to block
bandwidth-consuming non-productive email such as personal
greeting cards around holiday time.
-- Zip File Auto-Cleaning - not only detects viruses in zipped
files, but automatically cleans infected zip files as well,
eliminating the need to quarantine infected zip files for
administrator intervention.
-- Notes Script Scanning - protects against potential future threats
such as Notes hot spots and other Notes-specific malicious script
Performance Enhancements
-- Smart Scanning- eliminates redundant scanning to maximize server
efficiency (in environments with more than one Notes server)
-- Incremental Scanning - ensures that scanning is only performed on
documents that have been changed or newly posted to the Notes
database since the last scan (prescheduled and on-demand scans)
-- eMail Traffic Monitor -- monitors inbound and outbound mail
traffic so administrators can tell how much bandwidth individual
users are consuming, either by quantity of mail or size of
messages. Administrators can then use this information to adjust
mail configuration settings and optimize performance of their
Notes network.
-- Improved Multi-Threaded Architecture - provides for even faster
performance and greater scalability
