WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 14, 1999--
New Search Engine Provides the Best of the Web to Children and
Parents; Search Eliminates 32 Different Categories and up to 99.45%
of Inappropriate Content, Including Pornography and Hate Group Sites
PAX Internet, Inc., a subsidiary of Paxson Communications Corporation, (owner and operator of the United States' seventh and newest broadcast television network, PAX TV) and Fast Search & Transfer (FAST, the industry leader in Web search technology) today announced a strategic alliance to develop the world's largest and fastest `safe search' engine for the Internet.
Designed to provide parents with complete peace of mind when their children are surfing the Web, the new PAX Fast & Safe Search Engine (FSSE) will be a family-safe search engine based on FAST Search - The World's Biggest Search Engine(tm) - found at http://www.alltheweb.com. This exclusive safe search engine will debut in the early first quarter of 2000 on Paxson's PAXTV.COM and other Internet-related properties currently being developed by Paxson. PAX Internet, Inc. plans to market the new search engine on PAX TV in its first effort to reach the families of America with a safe Internet service.
FAST and PAX Internet will also license the family-safe search engine to a wide range of Web portal companies seeking to provide their respective communities with a safe and comprehensive search engine that will search "All The Web, All The Time(tm)."
Both PAX Internet and FAST will be contributing unique technologies to enable the creation of the family-safe search. FAST will provide the world's largest URL catalog for the engine (based on Dell PowerEdge(R) servers and PowerVault(tm) storage subsystems, the catalog is currently more than 200,000,000 URLs and growing) and its patented parallel search architecture delivers lightning-fast search response times. FAST will also license to PAX its high-quality still image and video transfer compression technology for use on PAX Internet.
"PAX TV has built its entire philosophy around family friendly entertainment and information - at PAX Internet, we believe that by creating this unique and exclusive family-safe search engine, we will be able to allow Internet users to reap the benefits of the Internet while protecting their children from the increasing amounts of inappropriate content that is literally a mouse-click away on other search engines," said Ben Ly, Director of Online Business Development at PAX Internet. "PAX Internet has chosen to partner with FAST in providing our safe search engine because they have the most comprehensive URL database, the fastest data retrieval, and are substantially ahead of their competitors in providing this level of technology and services. We expect this family-safe search engine to be used in connection with 20 million searches a day."
"PAX is the perfect safe search partner for FAST because they already lead the industry in providing high-quality family entertainment," said David M. Burns, president and CEO of Fast Search & Transfer, Inc. "PAX Internet has addressed a socially important and potentially explosive market with the family-safe search engine and we believe this will prove to be a compelling service enhancement to major Web portals, search engines, and content sites. We look forward to PAX bringing the full range of FAST technologies to their own customers and other major sites early next year."
PAX Internet, Inc. will feature the Fast & Safe Search Engine in all of its Internet portals, allowing users to take advantage of the Internet to the fullest extent, while enabling children to encounter the full realm of entertainment and educational possibilities without permitting them to stumble upon inappropriate materials. The Fast & Safe Search Engine will be a key part of the overall PAX Safe Search Environment and includes technology that blocks World Wide Web sites containing obscenity, pornography, and a long list of objectionable criteria, up to 32 different categories in all.
