Business Wire, Oct 26, 1999
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 26, 1999--
EMC Corporation today advanced its leadership role as a core infrastructure provider for the Internet-driven economy with the announcement of major new enterprise information management software, an Internet infrastructure validation and cooperative marketing program, and a new Internet-focused alliance with Oracle Corporation. Through implementation of solutions from EMC and its partners, both traditional and Internet-based businesses are creating a single infrastructure to harness and manage information from any source, platform and application, ensuring a rapid transformation to e-business models and timely realization of the business benefits of Internet technology. EMC is the world's leading provider of enterprise storage systems, software and services.
To survive and thrive in the new economy, organizations ranging from Internet startups to the world's largest companies are rapidly implementing an E-Infostructure, a shared foundation of technologies, tools, services and intellectual capital for enabling an uninterrupted flow of information. Today's announcements (summarized below and detailed in separate releases) strengthen the E-Infostructure and include:
EMC ControlCenter Software - new enterprise information management software that provides a centralized view through which companies will manage -- either remotely or over the Internet -- all information from across their enterprise. Integrated with enterprise management frameworks like Bull OpenMaster, CA Unicenter TNG, Hewlett-Packard OpenView, and IBM Tivoli TME, EMC ControlCenter presents a single user console for implementing all of EMC's existing and future management software.
EMC/Oracle E-business Alliance - a major expansion of a four-year alliance that further integrates technologies from two of the world's leading Internet infrastructure providers, to deliver the most reliable, scalable, and manageable Internet-based solutions. Both companies will dedicate full-time engineering and alliance resources to optimize and integrate Oracle database technology with EMC Enterprise Storage systems and software.
EMC Proven E-Infostructure Program - a new Internet infrastructure validation and cooperative marketing program to help companies capitalize on their investments in infrastructure. This new program recognizes and validates EMC Internet-based customers who have the E-Infostructure necessary to operate at peak efficiency, adapt to a constantly changing business climate, and easily manage Internet-driven growth. Member companies will display the EMC Proven logo on their web sites and in promotional materials, and participate with EMC in joint marketing initiatives.
Enhanced E-Infostructure Developers Program -New additions to the E-Infostructure Developers Program increase the ability of customers to quickly integrate third-party software with EMC Enterprise Storage through the immediate open availability of new and enhanced application programming interfaces (APIs). New and enhanced EMC APIs announced today help software developers build software paths for their applications to take advantage of the advanced features and functionalities of EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems and software.
Michael C. Ruettgers, EMC President and CEO, said, "One choice stands before companies competing under the new rules of an Internet-driven economy: either tap into the Internet's potential and put it to use for the business, or cave under its weight. The decision rests on one word -- infrastructure. As the information economy kicks into overdrive, the winning companies are turning to EMC Enterprise Storage solutions and services to help them build their most important IT project ever -- an E-Infostructure."
Jon Prall, Vice President of Operations, Excite@Home, said, "Many of the leading technology vendors say they aim for the enterprise - which they define as the customer's organization. For me, that's not enough because an enterprise shuts down at night. EMC is the enterprise and beyond, allowing millions of people to travel through our site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and have fast and uninterrupted access to our services."
Bruce Sink, Corporate Technology Officer, First Union Bank, said, "EMC Enterprise Storage is key to achieving our goal of making every product and service we offer available over the Internet. As the cornerstone to our information infrastructure, EMC has enabled us to seamlessly and rapidly bring on multiple terabytes of new storage to support our e-commerce business, which has grown from 300,000 to one million online retail banking customers in the last six months. Even as we absorb these monumental changes, EMC's cutting-edge software and super-reliant storage lets us deliver online services around the clock, speed up development of new services, and cost-efficiently manage huge amounts of information. With EMC, we gain a critical competitive advantage by being able to move more quickly in the e-commerce market."
