Business Wire, Oct 27, 1999
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 26, 1999--
Sun Microsystems today announced that the Solaris(TM) Operating Environment has gained momentum as the most scalable and reliable platform for appliance class computing.
Through an agreement to supply Inktomi with the latest Solaris Operating Environment Intel Platform Edition, including advanced network acceleration technology for its Traffic Server Engine, Sun is aggressively meeting the growing market demand for appliance computing. This follows Sun's recent partnership with Oracle for their Raw Iron database server appliance and other appliance computing applications in the telecom, government, medical and aviation equipment markets. Solaris is a highly reliable, scalable and available platform making it the ideal choice for the fast growing appliance computing segment. The new relationship with Inktomi is further evidence of Sun's commitment to reliable, appliance-based services.
"Leveraging Sun's Solaris Operating Environment platform with the industry leading network cache offers customers all of the benefits of an appliance with an open, flexible architecture," said Paul Gauthier, chief technology officer of Inktomi. "Inktomi Traffic Server Engine integrated with Solaris offers service providers new opportunities to rapidly design and deploy robust network services."
"This agreement with Inktomi furthers Sun's commitment to the appliance computing market," says Rich Green, vice president, Solaris Products Group, Sun Microsystems. "Sun Solaris powering Inktomi Traffic Server provides the reliability, scalability and performance customers have traditionally come to expect from Sun."
