Business Wire, Oct 4, 1999
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 4, 1999--
Siemens has set a new record for simultaneous on-line support of SAP(TM) R/3(R) users on the open source Linux operating system from Red Hat.
Using a Siemens Primergy(TM) 870/40 four-way Pentium III Xeon server, the system supported 241 Sales and Distribution (SD) benchmark users with an average dialog response time of 1.96 seconds and 1210 SAP Application Benchmark Performance Standard (SAP ABPS). This record-breaking performance further demonstrates the evolution of Linux into a robust, enterprise-ready client-server operating system as well as the outstanding performance of Siemens' Linux solutions.
Richard McCormack, director of marketing, Siemens Computer Systems, commented: "Linux has clearly become a viable, competitive proposition for enterprise computing. These benchmarks also indicate the commitment, care and expertise Siemens has invested in delivering complete Linux-based solutions for real-world enterprise applications."
Technical Background
Siemens' Information and Computing Products (ICP) benchmarking laboratory in Augsburg, Germany, achieved record performance using a Siemens Primergy 870/40 four-way server, the Linux operating system (Red Hat distribution, Kernel 2.2.11), SAP DB 6.2.10, and SAP R/3 Release 4.0. The 870/40 four-way server incorporates four Intel Pentium III Xeon microprocessors with 2 GB of main memory running at 550 MHz, each with 2 Mbytes of second-level cache.
The benchmark achieved 241 SD benchmark users with an average 1.96 seconds dialog response time, and 1210 SAP ABPS or 72,500 dialog steps per hour. This is equivalent to fully business processing 24,170 order line items per hour. The CPU utilization was 98 percent.
