The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 128.23 to 10401.23, the S&P 500 closed up 21.79 to 1304.60, and the Nasdaq closed up 59.12 to 2795.97.
MCI WorldCom's (Nasdaq:WCOM) planned acquisition of Sprint (NYSE:FON) hit a potential snag Friday, as BellSouth (NYSE:BLS) entered the fray with a $72 billion offer (later revised upward) to acquire Sprint. Shares of the companies involved ended mixed, with Sprint up 3 7/8 ( 6.80%) to 60 7/8, MCI Worldcom up 1 1/8 ( 1.60%) to 71 5/8, but Bell South down 2 11/16 (-5.92%) to 42 11/16.
A big deal in the online travel service sector was announced Friday, with Sabre Holdings Corp.'s (NYSE:TSG) Travelocity.com division and Preview Travel (Nasdaq:PVTL) agreeing to merge and form a new online travel powerhouse.

IPO standouts from the previous two weeks performed well Monday. Kana Communications (Nasdaq:KANA), a developer of customer communications software products and services for e-businesses, rose 20.97% to close at 75 on Monday, while Foundry Networks (Nasdaq:FDRY), a maker of data networking products, shot up another 6.52% to 135 3/4 on Monday.
