International Data Corp.'s just published executive report, Information Industry and Technology Update. 1999-2000 pegs Knowledge Management as one of the hot markets of the next five years.

The report cites three key underpinning technologies of KM systems as being: (1) universal search against multiple data stores, (2) content tagging, and (3) profiling and points out that "these three defining technologies are seen in...(smart) Web sites today."

Likewise, says Bruce A. Taylor, founder of the upcoming KMWorld'99 Conference and Exposition in Dallas, September 21-23, "these technologies when brought into collaboration spaces have the profound ability to change human performance individually and in groups."

The IDC report points out that until just this year, most Knowledge Management systems were being custom built, one-off, with "not many products to plug into the gap." So revenues in this market to date have been heavily skewed to the consulting and systems integration side of the business, says Taylor. "Now, however, there's a rich panoply of software that will quickly build this market into the predicted $3 billion to $5 billion software and services market that analysts have predicted.

The exhibitors at KMWorld'99, according to Taylor, will represent the "best of breed" from both the major innovation shops like Lotus, Microsoft and Compaq to the highly specialized KM shops of such as Autonomy, Dataware, Enigma and Semio.

"One of the most important aspects of KMWorld'99 will be that conference, tutorial and workshop attendees can get a strong grounding in what the systems and processes of KM are." says Taylor, and armed with that new knowledge, simply walk into the exhibit and find user-authiticated, market tested software solutions. It's going to provide a perspective that people have not had the opportunity to get before. Our exhibit hall will be filled with meaningful solutions from the leading KM solutions developers.

Taylor says, "Companies understand that they're now in a 24-7 global knowledge economy. Competitiveness, performance and ability to innovate demand new ways of thinking, and of capturing, sharing, using and re-using your informational and intellectual assets. Knowledge management will soon be considered a core competency of your company and its employees - so in order to stay competitive, it's imperative that you understand what different tools can do for you."
